Maybe even Renee Zellwegger could play Bridget?! That's almost 100% not going to happen but she would be amazing and I think that would be her London debut? She's got the voice for singing too, as we saw in Chicago.
Just watching clips of the film on YouTube and I think Renee is literally amazing in that role, she does an incredible British accent and I just love her!

Lazarus is on our way too. Talking about pop stars (in this case maybe something more) who decided to write scores for musicals.
Said that, I really hope to see this musical. I have high hopes about it (or at least I have the high hopes when Lily Allen was on board. Right now I just have hopes) In a funny world if we want a all British woman show they should put the Spice Girls in the composer slot. Let's be honest, it would be fun.
On a side note, Dianne Pilkington would have been great as Bridget.

Renee is far too old to play Bridget in her 30s! Not to mention she's never done theatre and I think the producers would rather someone new to play the role for this medium.

Renee didn't even sing live at the Oscars and Queen Latifah had to take her place.
I'm not sure who I'd want as Bridget. There's so much talent out there that hopefully they'll make the right call.

Yeah she isn't involved anymore which means they need to find someone else to write the music and lyrics. She pulled out in late 2024, according to Wikipedia. Its os strange because they had the book, lyrics, music and had even brought on Stephen Daldry and Peter Darling as director and choreographer. It was so close to going to the Savoy with Sheridan Smith until it all fell through so hopefully they're getting back on their feet. I do love the sound of the workshop cast though: Sheridan Smith as Bridget Bertie Carvel as Mark Darcy Julian Ovenden as Daniel Cleaver I do agree though that the title will sell the show itself so it doesn't necessarily need names but they certainly need a good comedienne as Bridget.

All the songs that were supposed to be included in the Bridget Jones' Musical (written by Lily) are on YouTube. I have listened to them all and I do quite like the lyrics to the occasional few but the actual music is pretty much very similar for each song. Also, the songs seem to be like great pop songs rather than MT songs and I am not sure how they would've adapted the songs for the stag? It would've been interested to have seen how they did it though and the response.
I'm also interested to see who they decide to draft in to write the score for the show. Whoever said Laurence O'Keefe, I can see him writing the music for a show like this. Only because he wrote some great lyrics for Legally Blonde and this show needs comical lyrics in it too so if he is good at doing that stuff, then he could be an interesting shot. It all depends on who they want and what sort of music they want

I think a British team should try and be found for this. With a British story and such quintessentially British characters, I feel American writers (for book, music & lyrics) would completely miss the humour for this entirely. I LOVE Legally Blonde (the musical), but that style is not right for Bridget Jones. Not to say that the writers of Legally Blonde can only write like that, but it's a pretty good indication. And I also love Kinky Boots, but one look at the lyrics and book for that show will tell you that some Americans write how they perceive British people to talk, not how we actually talk. Add to that a posh Hugh Grant/Colin Firth character and we're done!
There *must* be some quality British writers out there (male or female, pop and/or MT writers!) who could give this a go. I actually thought Lily Allen was a great choice, sad to hear she's no longer attached.

They ahve a new show at the union! (or at least James does, but i think Elliot is on the team too...

I'd love a new Howard Goodall score. He is the first composer that springs to mind. I can't think of any decent pop artists? Maybe KT Tunstall or Kate Nash?

The story and characters are so British and the Americans don't usually tend to get our humour (you can see that when they appear on British chat shows, they sometimes don't have a clue what is going on!) so a British writer should probably be best for a musical like this.

I have to say I don't quite understand the mindframe that a lot of Brits have of the Americans not getting our humour. They have as many brain cells as the rest of us, and British humour is hardly incredibly high-brow. It's like when people say Americans don't get sarcasm, yet the most famous and successful American comedy is Friends with Chandler, one of the most sarcastic characters in history. Just comes across as a bit superior, looking down on those dumb Americans. They do get our humour, and if they're not laughing, they probably just don't think it's funny! (Or aren't aware of the British references that a lot of jokes include).
But yes I understand that British composers tend to work better with British stories as they are more immersed in the culture of the story. Same with any other country.

The thing with Chandler's sarcasm (and sarcasm in American comedies generally) is that the line comes with a big neon sign and a parade shouting "This is a sarcastic line coming, you are going to LOVE it! Now laugh!!" It's thrown out like any other comedy line in a US sitcom, which absolutely has it's place. I think sarcasm in British humour is a little more subtle, less obvious, a little more biting and a little more witty.

Gosh the new film is brilliant.
It's has the potential to be a hit. Just needs the right music. Finding a story and making it funny I think is the easy part,

Such a shame it never happened. I was at an earlier workshop with Sheridan as Bridget and Michael Xavier as the hugh grant character and it was brilliant. As were Lily Allens music and lyrics.

I listened to the songs they were going to use, and they were quite possibly the worst songs ever written for the theatre. That is, they didn't fit in the theatre at all in my opinion.
