After seeing it last week again I'm pleased to won the audience award, it's in really good shape, I like it's current cast and even 30 years on it deserves it's place still on the West-End stage - I know some will disagree with me but it's a pure classic (they don't quite make them like that anymore)!

Anyone know why Christine was Blonde in the Olivier Award performance? That was the alternate wasn't it? cant say I was very impressed with Ben's performance in the awards show. I didn't think his voice was suited to it. |

I didn't think his voice was suited to it. I agree about Ben . Christine was played by Emmi Christensso, I thought she was really great. She was asked about her wig in a youtube video, and her reply was that in the original book Christine is blonde and from Sweden. And she is blonde and from Sweden, so Producers decided to keep her blonde . If that makes any sense ! Pleased they won the award though - makes a nice change from Les Mis winning ... again ! |

She rather liked it, and had another sip, and another, and another, until her hair started changing colour... Well, everybody knows that "absinthe makes the tart grow blonder"... I agree about Ben - during Music of the Night he seemed to be taking breaths in odd places as though he was struggling with having enough breath to complete the phrasing. His voice reminded me quite a bit of Peter Jöback's - a bit thin and reedy, especially when compared to someone like John Owen Jones. |

I think the difficulty with Phantom is we are now so used to faux operatic voices in the lead (such as JOJ). Therefore when a performer like Forster or Joback takes it, the tone switches. No less valid - but two very different styles.
In a different subject, I was pleased Phantom won out for the audience award. As much as I'd prefer Matilda to be able to pick it up one day..

I loved Peter Jöback's Phantom. I thought he was rather marvellous.
I've warmed to Ben Forster since he was Jesus. I'm tempted to go back to Phantom to see him actually.

The Oliviers performance actually made me want to see Phantom again, which I haven't done for a couple of years now. Was very surprised and impressed by Forster.

I loved Peter Jöback's Phantom. I thought he was rather marvellous. I've warmed to Ben Forster since he was Jesus. I'm tempted to go back to Phantom to see him actually. Peter Joback! Now there's a Phantom who could bend me over backwards on me serveringsvagn!  Some of these Phantoms are too young, aren't they? And too... erm... fit ? I mean, Little Mickey C was never a real dish, was he? |

Vocally, Foster is a Karimloo wannabe. But still sounds good and quite thrilling, I have to say.
Indeed I think the Phantom mold is rather sexy now. Most of the guys they cast, be it in London or the US tour, are younger strapping types. Occasionally you get the working man Phantom, i.e. John Owen Jones.

I saw this a few weeks ago with Ben in. I think he did a really good job of it and Christine was amazing too.
However I didn't love the whole show and felt pretty underwhelmed by it in all honesty. I've seen many shows and always put off Phantom, then I read similar things from other's who then adored the show. I just found it to be slightly boring at times.

Gerard Butler didn't even looked disfigured, apart from a bit of exposed skull. Plonk a bobble hat on it and there wouldn't have been a problem. I dont look that good on a normal day!  |

Women of a certain age ADORED Mickey Crawford... He was my celebrity crush when I was about 10 and my parents made me and my sister watch countless reruns of Some Mothers Do 'Ave 'Em! Still love the guy today, but not in that way anymore! I do think he's got a great voice though, and although he's not my favourite phantom (too many 'ghost' noises on the OLC!) he's definitely one of my faves! I'd take him over Gerard Butler any day! |
