I was semi-doxxed a few years ago, so the only thing you guys will see of me is my chest and part of my bedroom. Sorry. semi-doxxed? Do not apologise 49thand48th. Posting a profile pic in this thread is, and will always be a voluntary exercise.

I have finally joined in. I went with this picture because it is recent and the one of me dressed as an 18th century whore just seemed too theatrical! Do say hello! Hey, hey Snciole. Thanks for taking part! Great pic!

anthony40, you're starting to sound like one of those online bots that is programmed to automatically reply the same thing to every person, just in a very slightly different way! I love it!

It's really cool looking at threads now seeing loads of real people staring back at you. This has worked out really well.

Some posts have become "easier" to read, or understand, now the identity has been revealed. For some, the opposite is true. I miss the inventiveness and choices of some of the previous avatars, and liked it when they changed every so often. You are lovely, andrew, but weren't you the swans? I loved those swans! I wondered what they meant to you, where you found the picture, were swans important to you... The faces have been interesting, but the element of mystery has gone now. I've always liked an element of anonymity in chat forums... I know the choice to post our photographs is ours, but it has felt a little like we should all follow suit. And I'm sure that wasn't anthony's original intention. It's interesting that since some people have posted their photographs, so some have additionally revealed their jobs... (In another thread, one poster revealed where another worked on a voluntary basis. It was done in praise of their role but I wonder if the person was 100% happy with this information being shared with us all.) What will people be revealing about themselves next? For all sorts of reasons, we should all be wary of how much we are sharing with complete strangers online. Because while we believe we are all (mostly) one big happy family most of the time, we are (mostly) just a "room" full of strangers, and that room expands with new strangers entering all the time... Just my own personal thoughts. That's all.

I think some of us remember the internet at a time when we were all discouraged from revealing anything personal, our names, our towns, our jobs, our schools, anything at all that could be tracked back to us, for personal safety reasons. And others of us will have come to the internet in a time when we have been encouraged to use our real names and faces, for truth and accountability. And still others of us will be aware we're in an inbetween time, where we should be safe enough to reveal our names and faces, but at the same time should absolutely limit all other information in case it is picked up and used against us. I was definitely brought up in the "keep it secret, keep it safe" internet era, and now that I'm older, I'm perilously aware that a woman on the internet can receive quite viciously unwanted attention if she dares *gasp!* have an OPINION on something, so I won't be posting my face on here. And I fully understand why other people might not want to, but I don't think the people who are sharing are dumb, it's just all our own choices. (I do agree we should maybe limit ourselves to revealing our own personal information if we choose to, and not not revealing anyone else's without their explicit prior consent. )

I think it's all relative. Personally I'm fairly 'public' online. The combination of being a reviewer with articles/blogs linked to my personal twitter and my previous academic role meaning my work and name/face were already linked online means I'm not too bothered about sharing here or in other places. BUT I also remember a time when as Baemax says, you were encouraged to keep your 'real' self hidden online.
Certain things like, if I were going to the theatre alone I probably wouldn't post ahead of time here, just as a general 'keep safe' precaution, that has nothing to do with people on here, just that information being on the wider internet.
All that said, it's never ok to reveal other people's details online, unless you know them well enough not to ask (by which I mean they are actually one of your best friends, even then check)

I am so far behind the times that I don't have an image of myself or the means to create one.
However, to aid identification, I can reveal that many people have commented that I look like:
in 1980s: Nigel Havers
in 1990s: Jarvis Cocker
in C21st: my father

Well, it's only temporary for me. I'll be going back to BAU shortly What never fails to astound me is the way some people have their Facebook profile open to the entire world to peruse. And the stuff they put on it! Staggering. Stay safe people!
