Is it me or is the off-West End or Fringe scene mostly plays and very few musicals? What's the cause of this? Is it the fact that musicals often require more space than plays?
And secondly, I'll be in London from 30 October - 2 November. Will there be any good musicals on in Off-West End venues?

It'll be at least partly cost related. Even if you're doing a musical with a minimal cast, you'll still need to pay a band. You don't need a lot of space to do a lot of musicals, but you do need at least a couple of musicians in addition to your performers.

Money. You have to pay a band, but also pay for sound equipment to get everything heard, a sound designer to make it work, a musical director to do the music with cast, extra rehearsal time to learn the music, maybe extra technical staff to run the sound equipment. Musicals also tend to be more "show-y" so will require bigger budgets for set, lighting etc. It's a very expensive game, hence why proper musicals are only done at a handful of venues, and some pay terribly to make them work.

Yeah, money is probably the main issue. You often also need a bigger cast I think.

Well, the Union seems to be doing nothing but musicals now + Southwark Playhouse does quite a lot.
