If this isn't ripe for a full scale revival I do not know what is. The whole trans thing has never been so high on the agenda (I know Victoria isn't transgender but whatever) and with the right casting it could be huuuuuuge!
I'd do it with a talented drag queen playing the lead as a woman. So a man, playing a woman, playing a man, playing a woman! Gender f**k!
Bring it!

Thom Sutherland staged a wonderful production of V/V four years ago at the old Southwark Playhouse, Anna Francolini quite fabulous in the title roles.

I don't find the score a drag at all (I thank you), in fact I find it rather delightful.
And I love the way that 'Le Jazz Hot' gives me free rein to delve into notes I never even knew I could reach.

Stick with the fabulous film. The stage show is a dreary mess. I saw it at the Bridewell with Ria Jones (i think...) playing the title role. Even she couldnt save it.
Le Jazz Hot is such a great number. It always reminds me of a night in the Centre Stage bar in Gran Canaria (im sure alot of you have been there... is it still going??) They play video clips of musical numbers all night, and I was given a headpiece just like Julie wears in the film and I gave the bar my Le Jazz Hot. I havent drunk pernod since....

I haven't seen it but I love the filmed version with Julie Andrews. It's such a fun show, great star vehicle and that specific Broadway production looked fabulous. I haven't seen the Southwark version but I never understood why they cut out Paris Makes Me Horny! Such a great number!

It's well worth checking out. Some very funny moments, but not my favourite show overall. Some great songs, but too much filler.

Yes, I have a copy of that DVD (and if my memory serves me correctly at this hour of the morning) with Michael Nouri of who was in the Flashdance film.

I saw one of Dame Julie's last performances in this on Broadway - little did we know what was coming (though it was clear that the top of her voice was shot by this stage as the glass shattering note was very low!)
I think that this is a great little show - with the right cast. It might not be the most original of pieces but it has charm and enough good tunes to keep me happy.
It is on my list of shows to do - at some point!

Ha! Clicked on this thinking I was going to tell you there's a huge no expense spared revival coming up didn't ya!
Sorry! 😐
They should though. I love it and I NEED to see it on stage.
Now make me jel and tell me you saw Julie do it on Broadway before the voice went. Or Raquel.... or LIZA!
I know there was a mini revival somewhere a few years ago, Was it at the Union? What was it like done small?

The Southwark Playhouse did it, Anna Francolini and Richard Dempsey in the cast. It was great.

This was the equivalent of the current Hello, Dolly! revival of its age.
Julie Andrews declining her Tony nomination was so controversial. Liza being kinda drunk towards the middle of her run was gossipy. Raquel Welsch was shockingly horrible and the reason why the show closed (well- let's be real it wouldn't have survived without Andrews, but Raquel was a disaster). Rachel York was SO good in this.
There were some international productions of this- I believe in Mexico and definitely somewhere in Germany and a cast recording was made with Helen Schneider. There's also something that tells me Elena Roger might have played Vic/Vic in Argentina.
I've never seen the Southwark version, but I do own an audience recording, and so shocked that they've cut out "Paris Makes Me Horny". WTF were they thinking.

I love this musical and the Southwark production (in the old place) was great.

I saw Julie do it - about a week before she left the show. So one of the last people to hear her sing live! To be fair, it was clear that her voice was failing - the note used to shatter the glass was very low indeed. But it was a great performance from a class act nonetheless.
I am really surprised that it hasn't been picked for a proper UK production. It is a decent set of songs with an entertaining set of characters and a delightfully silly story. I think it is a far better show that something like Thoroughly Modern Millie.
It would need big name casting for it to do well - and someone who can really sing it. Not sure who they would cast - though I can think of many who they shouldn't...

Isn't it spooky that Julie lost her voice, then the person they picked to play Julie in SoM, that Connie girl, because she WAS picked to play Julie not Maria, lost hers playing her!
The curse of Julie. 😱

funnily enough I always thought this was let down by a terrible and weak score. The basis is there for a great show, but the music is so limp. some good scenes of physical comedy.

Nobody mentions the 2004 Bridewell production with Ria Jones. Having seen it perhaps it is best forgotten.

I've seen the film, the DVD of Julie doing it on Broadway and the Southwark production. The DVD is awesome just to get to see Julie on stage before her voice went, but the piece isn't one of my favorites. It has some great numbers, but didn't hang together amazingly for me. But it's still far better than Darling Lili, which I think was her previous film-musical?

Hallo and I have been watching the DVD of this recently and sort of wish I had seen it - just to see ms Andrews. I'm struggling to imagine Liza or Raquel in the role. Is it a good musical - the songs are certainly lightweight, but they threw a huge production at it and there are some great farcical staging in it, (all the running up and down the four roomed set!) and what an epic set, but oh the songs are turgid. Did anyone on here see it live, with any of the three leading men/ladies? If we did a big production of it here, who could play Victor/Victoria....well let's have a fantasy cast for the whole show. Who would be the central quintet? By the way, the DVD is well filmed, but oh Julie should not have done the introductory pieces, (so staid) and the red carpet bit is cringe making, but heck she was looking good, and yes a hell of a part to do eight times a week. They did have a splendid cast.
