Hi There has been talk for years about a world tour and come back for The lord of the rings musical. The official website still says coming soon. Does anyone at all know if this is ever going to happen or have any information about it. I personally think it was the best musical ever, and saw it 10 times in its short run and was sad to see it finish and have been waiting eagerly for its return. Also does anyone know who to contact to pester the makers about releasing a dvd of the the musical. Thanks for any info.

It's been looking at a UK Tour at the very least, and had gotten to the stage of pencilling in venues for next year, but it's been a good six months since I had an update so not sure where plans are up to at present.

Liked the music, staging and the Hobbits. The angry Gandalf didn't work for me. But the biggest problem was the story was too vast and too well known to fit into a 2 1/2 hour show, way too many 'fans favourites' scenes had to be missed out. Can't see it ever touring.

Loved it & saw it 3 times. Would certainly buy a DVD as only a very very dodgy bootleg available.

If this is still going ahead for 2017 then I'd imagine that they'd need to get a new director if Matthew Warchus is busy running the Old Vic. But then again he has had a busy 2016 already with 3 productions and one on the way (maybe another if he's doing Rosencrantz and Guildernstern Are Dead), so maybe he's making room for LotR now.
I thought this was due for arenas wasn't it? Or was that just an idea some people had because of the scale of the production?

I know most people hated it, but I loved it. Absolutely loved it. It also introduced the world to Rosalie Craig so we have that to thank it for, too. Rumours arrive every so often about this making a come back (New Zealand tour add the last rumour I heard ages ago) but I've given up hope. People who love LOTR hated it for missing out on do much story, those who didn't like LOTR didn't go, so it struggled to find an audience. If I recall it papered for ages and introduced half price week day matinées and producers propped it open for ages. |

I rather embarrassed myself by screaming when an Orc decided to surprise me during the interval between Act 2 & 3. The same thing also happened the last time I saw Cats. Thought I would be safe in the circle but one of the feline creatures managed to terrify me from behind.

Going through Antwerp last week past the massive arena there, suddenly saw "Lord of the Rings in Concert"!! When I returned home and checked on their web site - it was the film accompanied by an orchestra - Will if never come back?  ? |

These concerts have been around almost as long as the movie trilogy though. It's basically Howard Shore's film soundtracks played live by an orchestra with the visual crutch of the movie scenes being shown. These have also been around for other famous film soundtracks, I know there was a Star Wars in Concert doing the rounds and there's a tour of Ramin Djawadi's music for Game of Thrones coming up.
Stage Entertainment here in Germany sent me a link to take part in some online survey this week, which was all about whether I'd be interested in seeing Lords of the Rings on stage, so who knows? Although from the survey it sounded they were cooking up something more like a play. When I said I had no interest in seeing Gollum as a puppet, the survey was very abruptly over for me...

Cats, however, I remember jumping when a kitty snuck behind me during The Naming of Cats, and the 10 people within the row behind me laughed at my reaction (including myself). |

Being workshopped. New creatives, same producer. All very hush hush. Won't happen until 2018 at earliest subject to funding. The producer, Kevin Wallace, allegedly lost his savings in this and was haemorrhaging cash by the day. If it comes back expect something more akin to The War of the Worlds original arena tour than the stage production from 2005.

The fantastic Making Of book goes into some detail on this and is well worth a read, as is an outstanding retrospective I wrote a few years back "What Went Wrong?" for my old blog.

The oddest thing about the original at Drury Lane, was the same as "I Can't Sing" at the Palladium: both opened after the zeitgeist for the respective film / TV show had dissipated. If they had come to fruition at the time of greatest demand, I'd honestly have bet they would both have had decently long runs, quality or not. I agree. My first thought on reading that it's planning to return was "And who cares about LOTR now?" Sure you could argue that Harry Potter managed to create a brand new hype around the play despite the books/movies being some years old now, but somehow I have a sense that the "Potter Universe" has remained more active (much like Star Trek or Star Wars which have never really been away) whereas the LOTR hype has pretty much died down. |

I'd love to see this. I know it's incredibly long but from the short bits and pieces I've seen online, it seemed like a spectacular show. It was. I saw it 4 times and rarely see anything more than once. I know many hated it, but I just loved it (and I'm not even a bit LOTR fan). There were so many amazing moments. I saw it the first time from the balcony and when Gandalf faced off some beast/creature or other at the end of Act 1 (or it may have been the end of Act 2 as there were 3 act - sort of) and they blinded you with the red light and there was paper flying into your face and the noise... It was amazing. There were just so many wonderful stage effects, and golem was just great. And it basically introduced Rosalie Craig to the world (and rightly so, she sang so beautifully). *Sigh* Happy memories. Shame it didn't find an audience. Can't believe it's been 10 years! Must go and listen to the OCR... |
