I know there are dozens of operas that have been musicalized, some keeping the melodies at least and some just the plot. Here's a very short list to kick us off - and have any been an improvement. Have any musicals been turned into operas?
Carmen /Carmen Jones/ The Car Man (ballet)
Madame Butterfly/Miss Siagon
La Boheme/Rent
Aida/Aida
Edward Grieg's music/Song of Norway
Strauss's music/The great waltz
off you go......

Not sure if this counts, but La Traviata and Marguerite (the short-lived musical with Ruthie Henshall) both have the same source, "La Dame aux Camelias" by Alexandre Dumas. Except that Verdi re-named his heroine Violetta.
Germany did a rock opera called Tosca, based on the opera. No idea if it was any good though.

Ken Hill's version of 'The Phantom Of The Opera' took music from various operas.

There are several operas and musicals based on "Les liaisons dangereuses"
"Noye's Fludde" by Britten / the second act of "Children of Eden"
"Medea" by Cherubini / "Marie Christine" by La Chiusa
Thomas Adés' latest opera "The exterminating angel" that premiered last week at the Salzburg Festival has the same source material as the new Sondheim project.
There was also a dreadful german musical "The Ring" which is based on Wagners "Ring des Nibelungen".
Technically not an opera but an oratorio "Messiah (rocks)"
