Yep you have stars in their 60's to 80's still touring and Adele in Vegas at only 35.
Some fans think the performance is all about them.
In soaps we cannot really see characters just sat watching a play in silence although the time Harvey but the duct tape over Leanne's gob in Corrie it did stop her fish wife tones for a bit.
Maybe we need Evelyn or Eileen to give a rowdy theatre goer a tongue lashing or Hope gives them her death stare!

Name any tv programme or film where the characters go to the cinema or theatre and are NOT shown having a conversation in the audience during the show. There is none. This is what people take their cues from. Some can't separate fiction from real life, and they think this is acceptable behaviour. Good point, although it seems more prevalent now than BC (before COVID). And those same scenes frequently show the chatterers being shushed by those around them, so you'd think that would give folks a clue that it's not acceptible.

God this country is grotty. This simply does-not-happen at musicals in Germany and Austria. Even in the USA, which heaven knows has it’s own problems this would be vanishingly rare. I actually wanted to see this production of Grease but decided not to owing to the endless stories of bottom barrel binge Britain audiences. Grim! "Bottom Barrel Binge Britain" - Love it, there's a job for you as a headline writer (sadly for The Sun, but it would keep you in theatre tickets). Interesting points from others about Zoom during lockdown. I guess going to the Theatre may hold over that strange mix of people seeming to be professional and respectable on Zoom screen, but there's that snarky secret that they enjoy holding, that really they're sitting in their underpants. We're getting a lot of that 'wait til I stand up' behaviour. Haha. Surely The Guardian would have me?!?!

It does amuse me when people slag off the country they live in, if you hate it so much, why not move abroad? The grass isn’t always greener. Oh sure, but if we don't acknowledge the faults of the place we live, how can we hope to improve it? For example, there is a strong drinking culture in the UK, which can, at times, turn into anti-social drunken behaviour. That behaviour then starts to appear in theatres, the very thing we're here to discuss.

Probably cos they hate certain things about it and don't hate it in it's entirety. And probably because they know that all countries have good and bad. For obvious reasons seeing the good and bad is a lot easier in the country where you live. I see theatre in many countries and UK audiences are easily the worst. I have a job I like, family and friends here, I love most of UK humour and I think we have easily the best telly in Europe and some of the best variety of food (I could go on). I also am not fluent in any European languages. And wouldn't want to be further away than Europe with my parents in their 70s/80s. No desire to move! I do think, at the risk of sounding like a typical Remoaner however that much in this country is going down hill. The decimation of public services (NHS, social care, education etc etc) and public transport after 12 years of the worst government (IMHO) of my lifetime is utterly criminal.

There is no doubt in my mind that we have some of the worst cross over between alcohol binges and theatre audiences. It's not a reason in itself to emigrate.

To me, I think describing this country as Binge Britain is eye rolling. It's not perfect and it has issues but what country doesn't? That's why I made the remark about people should move if they hate living here so much.
To describe the population of this country as a bunch of drunks is both not true and a bit insulting.

Nobody has "described the population of Britain as a bunch of drunks" or said that "they hate living here so much", and "Binge Britain" is a perfectly apt description; our country has a deeply unhealthy relationship with alcohol consumption, it permeates every aspect of our culture in some way and has created a subculture that revolves around drinking as much as possible as quickly as possible, and any subsequent consequences to that are part of the fun. It is entirely correct to say that this is starting to bleed into theatre and causing significant problems.

There is zero doubt in my mind that if alcohol didn't exist, 50%+ (probably up to 80%) of bad behaviour would not exist. At the ATG regional venues it's become a hideous inevitability at weekends at most musicals....

People will be stupid with or without it.

As much as I loathe drunk people, I'd much rather they banned phones altogether over alcohol.
Drunk people gonna drunk, but EVERYONE over does the phone thing.

This isn't protest. It is middle class petulant posturing.

The country is not a bunch of drunks, but overall, we do seem to have greater problems with alcohol-related anti-social behaviour than other countries. We are not too well-liked abroad as tourists for this reason also.

Very perceptive points Sfsusan - the worrying thing if everyone was their authentic self is that those with a "hatred" agenda may somehow feel justified. I don't really want people to be their authentic self at the theatre, if that authentic self is noisy and annoying. I'd like their appropriate-to-a-theatre self please.

It does amuse me when people slag off the country they live in, if you hate it so much, why not move abroad? The grass isn’t always greener. If only it were that simple. It involves a lot of planning, time money and resources which many people don’t have. I did it, but it’s much more difficult now, especially within the EU.

I'd almost forgotten about this thread as it's slipped so far down, but felt I should mention the gorgeous lady (in her own eyes) in the audience of The Little Big Things a couple of weeks ago. She came in 'look at me', swishing her long blonde hair and making a futile attempt to pull down her impossibly short skirt. Having taken her seat, she made sure her skirt was so high you could almost see what she'd had for lunch, then set about sorting out her hair. Leaving it 'toss toss' loose clearly wasn't an option, as she first tried it in a top knot, which still wasn't satisfactory, so she opted then for a pony tail. All the time she was twisting in her seat, making sure that she could be 'seen'. When everything was finally to her satisfaction, she finished by taking off her shoes, only putting them back on in the interval so she could fetch wine. Granted she wasn't doing this during the show (apart from the bare feet), but it was attention seeking and distracting, as she was seated next to me.

When someone’s hair is so long it hangs back over the seat..that.
