I saw her once at a show, making sure everyone noticed her as she made her way up the aisle and into her seat, where she remained standing and looking around for some while.

A video shows ushers at the Palace Theatre Manchester with A3-size posters saying "PLEASE REFRAIN FROM SINGING ALONG. Thank you." (Their italics, not mine.)
How passive is that? It's meant to be a rule of the house but it's presented as a polite request. They might as well have added, "but don't worry if you can't help yourself, because no-one will stop you, and we don't want to be killjoys or we'll upset Vanessa Feltz."
If I were FoH management, the sign would be worded more emphatically and backed up by an audio announcement prior to each act saying simply: "Singing along is not permitted. Offenders WILL be ejected without refund."
You need to make it clear that you mean business, and then be true to your word. No pussyfooting around.

Def irresponsible of Feltz and Hammond. Did they think they were being funny and nobody would take them seriously? Never underestimate the stupidity of the general public, someone once said. I think they both should apologise on the same show to the same people and say they didn’t intend their remarks to be taken seriously and they should invite a couple of the show’s cast to come on and explain.

joining in is acceptable when encouraged by the performers, as in Mother Goose down the road, and everybody was good natured and kept quiet when they should. But oh dear, alcohol has so much to do with this. watching Imelda battle vainly on during Rose's Turn against a group of pissed women clapping and shouting 'go girl' nearly ruined my theatre going for life.

Someone was kicked out of Jersey Boys today, mid performance, 2nd row of the stalls. I don’t have the details, I just saw it on insta.

But other than that, how was the play, Mrs Lincoln?

Kirsty Sedgman, whose PhD was all about this, has made a long twitter thread - no answers, but certainly some things to think about:

Her conclusion seems to be that some people like it noisy, other people like it quiet, you can’t provide both groups with what they want under the current arrangements so theatres should do performances in both styles.
She’s managed to get two books out of that!

Alison Hammond has apologised on Twitter. Maybe someone more "teckie" than me could post the link?

Pretty good statement to be fair - obviously she shouldn't have said what she said in the first place, but she's acknowledged the issues people had with her comments.

Still needs to be said on TV.
That is there the damage was done.

Alison Hammond has apologised on Twitter. Maybe someone more "teckie" than me could post the link? Nope, I don't buy it. The sniggering on TV showed their true colours. If she really believed this about theatre, she wouldn't have been so dismissive in the first place. My opinion of her went down massively and I see no reason to change that.

Nothing from Vanessa who was the main culprit.

My opinion of her went down massively and I see no reason to change that. Totally agree. This is just damage limitation. We saw the true person and what they thought on live tv, don’t try and swerve it now that it’s causing you a social media problem.

Needs to be said on the telly in same time and format as the first remarks. That is what people watch. Not everyone who saw her in the first place has twitter.

The solution for bad behaviour in general is tasers, tasers and lots of tasers.

If that's the case he needs to deal with the social media editors at ITV given they're the ones that put out the edited clip without his arguments in it. And "arguing AGAINST people singing too loudly"? How about singing AT ALL..?

The whole segment was badly misjudged. "The whole point is to sing along loudly whilst eating an ice cream!"
The stupidity of these talking heads on TV spouting nonsense for a paycheque.

That is about as far from a genuine apology as it's possible to get, blaming US for taking issue with it rather than reflecting on what he said, like he's above criticism. Thought he was an OK presenter before, genuinely dislike him now.

I think people are getting carried away with suggesting Alison and Dermot should be forced to do a segment on theatre, it's not going to happen especially since they're off next week.
