Ah, so schoolteachers still go in for mass punishments. Having been a non-offending child who often suffered under them, I still think they're rotten. One of our teachers used to try the 'everyone in detention for one offender' thing and I basically started a revolt at 14 by saying I wouldn't be staying and offering to go to the head teacher's office to talk about it. The class (barring the offender) went home on time. Oh, well done! In 1956, I was standing at a bus stop in Worcester for my bus home at the end of my day at Worcester Royal Grammar School. There were five other boys at the stop. A master nicknamed Jake walked past. He turned back. "One of you used my nickname. Who was it?" Silence. "Very well. You are all in detention." (At that point someone owned up; whether he was the real evil-doer I don't know--perhaps he was an altruist who sacrificed himself, Jesus-like, for the rest of us.) In the theatre scenario described, it seems that, had I been one of the children, though I might have been scrupulous to pick up all my litter and have picked up some litter dropped by others, I was still liable to punishment because some litter was still on the floor. Nasty teacher.

Obviously not pouring popcorn out (people are the worst!) but both my local Vue cinemas have a new announcement over the past few months where they ask for all rubbish to be left at the seats to help with recycling. As someone who used to be a cinema usher, this makes me apoplectic. Honestly, if I was working for Vue and they announced that, I would quit on the spot. The working day was hard enough without cleaning up people's crap, making it actual policy to leave the cinema looking like a tip is unfathomable. I don't understand it either anyway, at my local they seem to chuck it all in the same bag anyway. In the lobby are separate bins but nobody reads the signs for what goes in what!

Not so much bad behaviour but I noticed one midland venue which is running a panto has it clearly advertised which panto shows are school performances with a message "there will be a large number of school children present". The other performances could well have a lot of children in the audience and probably younger but there will be more adults present with them I guess.
I decided to see the panto at Wolves Grand last night as the writers and producers have a good panto pedigree. No real bad behaviour but a huge amount of children being taken in and out or to the loos during the show. Maybe as this is only my 3rd post lockdown panto I noticed it more.
Also probably the youngest ever baby I've seen be taken to a show. They only looked a few weeks old but slept all the time so cannot fault them.

It's a totally inappropriate environment and a loud show can damage their ears. That one may have slept through it, but it's just unfair to the baby and the rest of the audience if the baby wakes up.

Daily Fail deliberately emphasising the drinking element to the show there. The show actually makes it clear on the type of behaviour they tolerate, there are posters around the theatre about having a good time but showing respect for your fellow audience members. In the very many times I've been to see this I've never seen anyone overstep the mark so the behaviour of these women must have been particularly bad.

At the Orange Tree the other day a woman approached the two women sitting in front of me and told them they were in her seat. The two women checked their tickets, the solo woman didn’t have a smartphone but told them B27 was her seat. The pair got up, one got an usher, and in the meantime the solo woman sat down, loudly telling everyone nearby “I’M B27! I’M NOT MOVING! I’M B27!” The usher went off to check with the box office, while the woman started looking through a notebook. A male member of staff appeared to tell her what she had already realised herself - that she should be in B37, not 27. And with that she was gone.
I’m sure we’ve all arrived at some point to find someone in our seat, but I’ve never seen anyone react quite like that. She was aggressive straight away, on the attack before she even opened her mouth.

Any child who hasn't started talking would be likely to cry just to communicate. I agree it is stupid to take children that young to shows unless they wear ear protectors. At a panto there is always going to be noise from the children in the audience so you maybe don't notice a baby so much. But at plays/musicals taking a young child is just stupid.

Well behaved audience at Hamilton in Manchester when I went yesterday (at least where we were sitting). What was off putting were the ushers coming round to deliver drinks orders until well into the second half - looks like ATG definitely prioritise selling drinks at the expense of the show so is it any wonder why people make the most of it?

How frustrating - that’s just creating a disruption to other customers sat near those having their drinks delivered… and enabling the bad behaviour if anyone misbehaves because they’ve had a few. I know they’re a business and therefore need to make a profit, but ATG have a lot to answer for.

Some newer church buildings have "quiet rooms" or "mother's rooms" for those with squalling babies. The sound is on speaker for those inside. In the US, movie theaters used to have these soundproof rooms (we called them crying rooms) in the 1950s.

I think a church is very different to a theatre though. Most theatres in London do not admit "babes in arms".

Are there any consequences for these people who disrupt shows aside from being escorted out? The airlines have a "NO FLY LIST" theatres should have something similar that is shared with all venues alerting them to potential troublemakers and after 1 or 2 incidents they should be BANNED FOR LIFE!!

But how would one actually go about this? A person could use a different email address or card to book the tickets, or simply get their partner/friend/companion to book the tickets for them. No one is ID'd on the way in to see if they're barred.

To be fair to those who had ordered they looked quite embarrassed/annoyed to be receiving them mid-show. I presume they’d ordered in the interval and the FOH team ran out of time to fulfil the orders. Was chatting to a friend earlier who worked for an ATG theatre and hated the system - said there was never enough staff to do it properly (e.g. make sure the drinks could actually be selected and delivered pre-curtain up).

I'm always dubious as to whether these avenues of extra revenue ever actually generate extra revenue? Is there going to be a significant enough amount spent on these services to justify them? Wouldn't those people have just gone to the bar themselves anyway had it not been available?

I used to work for an ATG venue and to be honest the whole operation is a shambles staff underpaid every opportunity is to make more money. the order from your seats thing was a killer when i worked for them never enough team on it and half the time it wouldn't be used but we had to have team on it meaning the regular bar was understaffed. if i could avoid ATG venues i would it still shocks me to this day that a drink at Bristol Hippodrome (which was until recent my local) cost me more money than a drink in a London venue its ridiculous. Rant over im home for christmas next week and have lots of shows booked in praying for good behaviour because the older im getting the less tolerant i am haha.

I still haven't forgiven them for not bringing my very expensive ice creams during the interval of Sunset Boulevard. They could have surely just turned ordering off if not enough staff?

The Ordering via app can work but it should be done in a separate area rather than to seats. Delfont Mackintosh's ordering system when I went to see Dear England with a friend worked great.

Yes, I completely agree. If they don't have enough staff available to fulfil the 'at seat' promise, they should switch it off.
IIRC it was widely introduced during the re-opening post-Covid, when seating was socially-distanced and it was a good way to avoid patrons having to mix as much in communal areas of the theatre when buying refreshments. Now though, surely it's just a way of generating extra revenue?

I guess they gamble that people who might want a drink but can’t be bothered to get up and queue will order when previously they might not have?

TBH the Delfont approach is much better than the ATG approach and indeed I saw at Nimax they have a customer collection area for preorders so ordering and delivering at seat should be replaced by an area for preorders which I'm sure was the way before.
