But you have a point. It's not much of a challenge if you can interpret "5" as meaning "as many as I want". |

...and obviously I'm being my usual sarcastic self, which sometimes (chooses words carefully) the more uncomplicated don't "get". I love the idea of being sanctioned!!! How dramatic... What happens? Do I get held for five seconds on my next pitstop? Or miss my next two matches? Get locked in a room with a Marti Pellow sings Sondheim cd playing on a loop?
I can't believe that the MOD team are happy to have such anarchy on the pages of the board.... 😂🤐drops🎤

It’s a very tough one since my taste in musicals has changed over the course of my life. Also, my opinion of a musical is influenced by how good the cast was when I first saw it, so my list of top 5 performances wouldn’t be the same as my top 5 musicals.
Trying to ignore those things though, I’d say:
1) The Hunting of the Snark. I don’t think any show will ever trump the love I had for this as an 11 year old.
2) Napoleon
3) Wicked
4) Guys and Dolls
5) The Music Man (another show I grew up with).
To go with the majority, rebel, and continue to top 10:
6) My Fair Lady
7) Miss Saigon
8) Lend Me a Tenor
9) The Drowsy Chaperone
10) A Slice of Saturday Night (frivolous, yes, but such good fun, LOL).
I feel guilty now though for missing so many good shows I love off the list.
BOTTOM five would be much easier. New thread for that?!

1. Phantom (with the right cast! As this is the first show that REALLY got me into musical theatre it has a special place in my heart)
2. Matilda
3. Billy Elliot
4. Les Miserables
5. Wicked
Cats would have a place in there for similar reasons to Phantom but it seems it is forbidden to name more than 5! Also, for theatre experiences, The Color Purple at the Menier Chocolate Factory was amazing but I think that was more down to the cast and production than the show itself.

I struggle with things like this, because what do I pick - my top 5 musicals, my top 5 productions, my top 5 experiences watching a performance? There's some overlap, but they would be different lists.

I'm glad to see Miss Saigon in so many top5's.
Miss Saigon is my favourite show of all time. Not just because of the great music and story and characters, but also the way it's fully sung, and yet you never ask yourself why they are singing. Every note, word, line has a reason and never feels out of place. There is never a moment where it gets towards parody, which I find to be the case in most other shows.
While other shows seem like parodies, have some misplaced dance break (hyena's in Lion king), or just silly things like "I'm just a little bit.....(bar rest)........naughty...end chord (Matilda). Or Hamilton, far fetched dances out of nowhere, or repeating a character's name all the time and end each song with a cool headflip on the last chord, etc.
The only other show that feels fully truthful to me is the Sound of Music, because the way the music is used makes sense as well and never feels forced. Maybe also because a lot of songs there have a purpose, are like performances in a performance. That's why Miss Saigon is so rare in my opinion, because it still feels natural and the only songs that are meant to be "performances" are the prostitutes in Dreamland and the dance in the American Dream which is basically a dream sequence. Everything else feels just as natural.

Having thought about my answer to this for a while, I have come to the conclusion that I can't/shouldn't really answer as most of the musicals I have seen I have only ever seen one production of with one set of actors, so I have no idea whether I'd enjoy them as much if they were any different. However, that aside, simply in terms of enjoyment of things I have seen I'd say:
1) Singin in the Rain
2) Mary Poppins
3) City of Angels
4) Sunset Boulevard
5) The Phantom of the Opera

I've been umming and aging for ages about this. In this order:
1) Starlight Express
2) Sister Act
3) This is where it gets hard. I think I have to put Titanic here (the Charing Cross production and cast specifically.)
4) In The Heights
5) This one's a toss up but I'm going to go with Sunset Boulevard.
(The toss up was with Kinky Boots, but I chosen Sunset because I think the story and score flow better and are more coherent. Although there are probably more songs I prefer from Kinky Boots.)
I've gone over and over it in my head, and these are the ones I keep coming back to. (Lend Me A Tenor and Betty Blue Eyes are up there for me too, but don't quite make the cut.)
