Oh and another thing: If you're flexible in your planning, I would not choose July perhaps. New York City is a steaming cauldron of awfulness in the middle of summer and as it's high tourist season the Times Square area is an utter circus. Americans for some reason also love to turn their theatres into fridges. So you spend the day in a nice summer dress, then sit shivering in the theatre because it's air-conditioned to ressemble the North Pole. Unless you have a hotel near Times Square and can change before seeing your show, you need to carry warmer clothes around all day and change in a restaurant beforehand. Or maybe that's just me... Second that! See also August I actually got ill from the extremes of heat/cold in NY in summer. Not a fun time!

Some theatres aren't really like that, but it's true. Also offices.
I've lived through five NYC Julys and I would definitely not recommend July and August for any kind of vacation here. I don't understand why tourists come here instead of somewhere a little less strength-sapping!

Indeed! in my tourist-y defence, I was there in August for work and spending most days in ice cold archives and then out into the humidity. British people don't survive well in either! But given the choice I'd also rather go anywhere in winter anyway!

May jettison the Cherry Orchard for Sweet Charity (off Broadway) instead, but balking at the $225 a ticket for a off Broadway show, when it does transfer to Broadway I will more more than likely see it for $60.

Hi Tom89. I'm in New York next April too. I am planning to see War Paint, Hello Dolly (though that will be a preview) and not sure about the third. Can't decide between Dear Evan Hansen or The Great Comet (assuming they're both still open). I might have time for both if I'm lucky. Let us know what you decide.

I've got my next trip all booked (New Years and first week of January). As usual most of my show time will be spend at Sleep no more.
But I do have a few Broadway shows planned. Great Comet is definitely on the list as is one last visit to Jersey Boys (usually I wouldn't watch it again over there but a friend is playing Mary so that's a must see). Also contemplating Dear Evan Hanson and Book of Mormon (just because I'd love to see Stephen Ashfield on Broadway). But as it looks like I will be there for Color Purple's closing night I might just go and see that instead of BOM.
I'm excited to hear which new shows will be in town on the trip after though - possibly in May (if I have any money left after my week in Shanghai in April).

The Color Purple hasn't announced closing. Are you just looking at the date they're selling up until?

They haven't announced it but there have been more than slight rumours January 8th is closing night. Nothing confirmed obviously.

The Color Purple hasn't announced closing. Are you just looking at the date they're selling up until? Perhaps not yet, but Paul Wontorek alluded that the new Sofia would be taking over from Danielle for the last two months of the show's run, and all signs point to a closing date of January 8th.

For anyone interested, The Front Page was excellent. Nathan Lane doesn't appear until towards the end of act II (of III) but it's worth the wait, and the rest of the cast (in particular John Slattery) are excellent.
US audiences do make me laugh. With such a stellar cast, every time someone walked on stage for the first time they received a round of applause and cheering. One actor looked so similar to Nathan Lane that he kept getting the ovation each time he returned to the stage, which I think was off putting for the actor! Amused me though! And as it's a comedy, I was less concerned that the disruption takes you out of the action, so to speak.

I heard that's been happening a LOT during Jefferson Mays' first appearance. He might be used to it now.
