For a couple of years running, Manchester Royal Exchange's Christmas offering is about a Northern woman - from Yorkshire. 'Betty - The Musical' about Betty Boothroyd', born in Dewsbury, and now 'Spend Spend Spend' about Viv Nicholson, born and died in Leeds.
Has there ever been a Manchester-set musical of note? I guess there was 'Coronation Street - the musical'.
Liverpool has done well with 'Blood Brothers', and earlier Lionel Bart's 'Maggie May'. Apart from London, Sheffield might be the capital of musical settings with 'Everybody's Talking About Jamie' & 'Standing At The Sky's Edge'. Widen it to Yorkshire South and West and you add in 'Spend Spend Spend' and 'Betty Blue Eyes'.
Does homegrown/home-set matter? Local writers will certainly notice.

What a beautiful show that was - I would love to see it again The original production at the Opera House was one of those perfect theatrical experiences.

For Liverpool, I remember the really lovely "Once Upon a Time at the Adelphi". Hope that sees the light of day sometime.

Has there ever been a Manchester-set musical of note? That Day We Sang. Ah - perfect that it was Victoria Wood. It's 11 years since it was on at Manchester Royal Exchange - I wonder if a revival would be popular.

Just looked up the Coronation Street musical (mainly a failure) - it was called 'Street Of Dreams'.
The Daily Telegraph said one of the few highlights was “I Know How it Feels”, a poignant duet by street siren Elsie Tanner, with her younger and older self singing to each other. This came after 'Spend, Spend, Spend' which is probably where they got the split-character idea from.

It does feel like Manchester should have more musicals about it. Just not a sodding Smiths or Oasis musical, please!

It does feel like Manchester should have more musicals about it. Just not a sodding Smiths or Oasis musical, please! Does the BBC's Manchester Passion count? I thought their songs worked well in that. Why not. I started thinking about the band James (due to the mention of other Manchester bands) and had a vague memory of 'Sit Down' used on TV. It was indeed this; and I've just read and been reminded that Tim Booth, lead singer of James, played Judas Iscariot - singing The Smiths' 'Heaven Knows I'm Miserable Now' in the JCS 'Damned For All Time' slot! I'm guessing Jesus sang 'Sit Down' - interesting swap if so. The whole thing is on YouTube. Original TX: BBC Three 2006 The Smiths. Stone Roses, Elkie Brooks, James, Joy Division, M People, Robbie Williams songs in it. No Inspiral Carpets tracks included according to the Wikipedia song list. Grrr. I'd like to have heard Jesus sing "No one ever said it was gonna be easy" ('I Want You').

'Spend Spend Spend' about Viv Nicholson, born and died in Leeds. Sorry to be 'that' person, but she was born and died in Wakefield, rather than Leeds.
