Disappointing productions

Expectations play a big role here. If we set ourselves up for something and it doesn't deliver that, we may see this as disappointing, "meh", when in reality it's still a good show, but we can't see it differently. I think that e.g. Hadestown being brought up here is such a case. It is a good show, maybe not everybody's favorite, but it's hard to say it's "bad". But it can easily be a disappointment if we expect a mindblowing theatre-changing experience.

At risk of stating the bleedin obvious, surely disappointment in the context of seeing a musical or any kind of entertainment is dependent on what in the opinion of the individual is good or bad about it. There can be no absolute definitions of those terms because they are not facts but opinions based in the context here on one's expectation and emotional reaction to the show.
To coin a phrase, one man's (person's) meat is another"s poison. As a specific example I go to most shows on my own but a friend joins me occasionally. We saw one particular show together on a Monday last year which was my sixth time seeing it. Friend just didn't get it and couldn't understand why it's so popular. He would definitely consider it a disappointing production. I've been back twice since.

Agree though what I dislike is the negativity which seems to have become a far greater feature than it used to be. Presenting a negative view as a fact rather than opinion. 

This thread makes me feel good that I enjoy 99% of all the shows I see with no ifs or buts. Being non-critical and very easily pleased has its advantages.

Expectations can definitely play a big part. I went to see SuperYou at Leicester Curve, primarily to see one of the cast. Went in expecting not to like it much as what I’d seen online looked like it wasn’t my kinda thing, a very cheesy American ‘dream big and you can do anything’ message piece. Which it kinda was, but I must have been in the right mood for it as I actually quite enjoyed it. Some of the songs are still rattling around my brain a couple of weeks later, which I think is always a sign of success with a musical.

ABSOLUTELY YES! Half the time I was bored, the puppets were nice and the only reason I went to see it. The original film is only 1h 30m and they seem to have struggled trying to lengthen it with filler scenes and long silence that add nothing to the plot but to sell drinks at interval!
