Currently at the interval of a local am dram production and spotted a couple of people walking around at the interval in just their socks! I personally slip my sock off during the show and slip them back on for the interval as it’s the natural thing to do but my brother says it’s fine, and he does it at west end shows! Wanted to hear some thoughts of thread members! Admin feel free to move this to another etiquette thread! Personally I think it’s unacceptable to do it as it’s a theatre not your living room, I don’t mind you getting a bit comfortable but I see this as too far.

My viewpoint is that taking your shoes off at any point during a show, West End or otherwise, is pretty gross. Please tell us you mean your shoes. Even then… nope. Keep your shoes and socks on! I did mean shoes haha (bloody autocorrect). Would love to hear other peoples viewpoints! |

I would only take my shoes off (assuming I felt the need) if I was in a box on my own. And I certainly wouldn't want to walk about in socks around a theatre and get them dirty and picking up god knows what from the not always pristine carpets.

As long as folk aren't talking, filming or eating KFC at a performance then I'm generally cool with kicking off your slingbacks

Shoes on at all times in public. And definitely not on seats either.
Can’t think why you’d want to walk around most theatres in socks. The carpets are that sticky at the Liverpool Empire it’d be like *that* basement scene in Home Alone.

Can we talk about the growing presence of people who lack theatre etiquette, I.e. talk, constantly rustle sweets or even sing along? Is it too difficult to be considerate towards others? Is there anything we as a theatre community could change?

Tasers & electric cattle prods on the back of every seat seems like an obvious solution, but I’m quite easy going. Something bladed might be more of a deterrent.

Have to admit I've occasionally slipped my sandals off in the summer, but wouldn't walk around the theatre without footwear. I don't really mind if people take shoes off as long as they don't have smelly feet. I think the other antisocial behaviour is far more serious - noise, food, phones, lateness, etc.

I think people with smelly feet possibly don’t know they have smelly feet. Same with BO. Maybe I have smelly feet and BO*. Who knows? Either way, just keep your clothes and shoes on. It’s better for everyone.
(*I don’t. I smell like Chanel Pour Monsieur 🙂)

I had terrible wind yesterday. Not the slow-cooking highly toxic, paint stripping stuff but when you've eaten something and it really kicks off within 30-mins or so.
There was no way I could keep all that in - so painful - and not float up the balcony so the only option was a strategic leak, hoping for noise-free egress. Hugely stressful and distracting, sweating as well.
All of that from a cheese and onion sandwich + crisps meal deal - who'd a thought.

I tend to slip my shoes off any time I'm sat down, my feet get ridiculously hot (but dont smell - I'd put my shoes back on if I thought they did!). I used to go barefoot a lot (not in a theatre, just generally) and was astounded at how many people find that offensive. My thoughts: (1) my feet get washed at least once a day which is more than anyone's shoes do and (2) if you dont like feet, dont look at them.
Walking around in socks in anywhere other than a home is a bit weird to my mind (bare feet are fine!) but I wouldnt comment on it unless they smell.
Like PPs I'm far more bothered by noisy wrapper-rattling bovine chompers, who I'd cheerfully garotte.

I had to forgo a trip to a much anticipated concert last night - an American artist who I like to see whenever she is performing or having her compositions performed in the UK. I correctly anticipated that the cough that I was developing during the day would get worse in the evening and be a disruptive presence in the quiet of a concert hall, especially in a concert featuring vocals and a string quartet. Thankfully my daughter was able to use my ticket and accompany her dad to the performance, but I am very upset at missing it. But then I think of just how embarrassing it would have been to have a coughing fit in a quiet movement...... But clearly virus season is upon us as my husband said that there was quite a lot of coughing in the auditorium. Always a difficult one to call when tickets are expensive and refunds not necessarily available.
