Yes, it’s still running. No, I don’t think there’s a thread.
This is one of my favourite shows, but I’d never before seen it on Broadway. It’s also one of few Sunday evening shows and I was able to get a Rush ticket. Front row Mezzanine, at the end, clear view. I’m glad I was at the end as the curve meant I had leg room, which looked appalling for the rest of the row.
As for the show. It’s the same as the other versions, but compared to London, this looks tired. The main problem? London generally casts fresh graduates, but here they don’t seem to like casting anyone under 40. From my angle, I could see every Mormon boy with a receding hair line and a particularly unfortunate combover that wouldn’t stay in place.
Kevin Clay was a great Elder Price on the UK tour. Vocally excellent here, but really camping it up. Cody Jamison Strand, I think was a London Cunningham, but don’t believe I saw him. He was channeling Joe Pasquale. It is something when Elder McKinley comes across as more masculine than the two leads. The star really was Jacques C. Smith as Mafala Hatimbi.
Other oddities. The stage is longer and thinner than London, which affects that staging and some of the set that doesn’t leave between scenes. They have an extra Mormon in some of the scenes. They really whizz through this (apart from the band playing super slow at times, slower than the vocalist. The sound is also odd, I presume a smaller orchestra. Two lines missed at different points(I don’t think they were cut, as the rest of the conversation didn’t make sense). This was overacted to the hilt. I don’t know if this was just boredom for the cast at the end of a long week.
This isn’t the hot seller that it used to be. It needs freshening up. I would go back, but the London cast is so much better, as is the theatre itself.
