A very distinguished classical stage actor who worked a lot with Peter Hall. I saw him often at the NT, RSC and several other theatres. I think I last saw him in the 2011 NT production of The Cherry Orchard.
I didn't realise he played Gaveson opposite Ian McKellen in the very famous 1969 production of Edward II which in tandem with Richard II was McKellen's breakthrough.

A rather memorable All For Love at the Almeida with Diana Rigg and he was Julian Marsh in 42nd Street with Georgia Brown. An impressive range.

The obituaries remind me he was nominated for an Olivier for the Ghost & Player King in the NT Rory Kinnear/Nicholas Hytner Hamlet. In that production as Ghost I remember he was dressed in exactly the same neutral colour as the walls of the room behind him so with appropriate lighting he seemed only partially present - a simple idea but very effective.

Another fine actor passed away. One of those actors a bit like Ian Gelder who we also lost this week who had been in so many famous TV series. He also had a few nice film roles and appeared in countless plays where he is perhaps at his finest.

So sorry to hear of the passing of a great actor. I've admired his performances many times, from the Commodore in Fuente Ovejuna to Exeter in Henry V in 2013. He leaves a great legacy and many wonderful theatrical memories.

I was unaware of his stage career. He was such a familiar face from movies and TV for decades. For some reason I always remembered him from the short-lived Australian detective series "Boney" which he was in in the 70s.
