A nice visit to the CC theatre for today’s show to end the week. At 90 minutes straight through it, it zipped along nicely holding my interest throughout (unlike the guy sat next to me who decided to rest his eyes for parts of the show) exploring the life of Marie Curie. Whilst the short run time was greatly appreciated, I think this was to the detriment to Seeun Choun’s book. I would certainly of liked a more in depth look at the research aspect of her work with Pierre (the ups and downs of research) and maybe a bit more focus on the impact of radium on the factory workers ( a longer build up to the effects to give more impact). I think it worked well as an introduction to Marie and Pierre and their work if unlike myself you didn’t already know their story or their contribution to science. I paid £30 for the ticket (G1) from a London theatre direct offer and for the price and view I only missed a bit of video on the side of the stage) and felt I got value for my ticket from this viewing.
I thought the score as decent enough to listen to and helped move the book forward nicely. However, walking out of the theatre post show, none of the songs have stuck with me and it really wouldn’t be a score I would want to listen to in the future. With the cast, we only had Rio Maye as Emilia as a cover. The big positive for me was this cast. A really watchable cast led by the fantastic Ailsa Davidson as Marie. Alongside Alisa, I would give a shout out to Chrissie Bhima as Anne who was the other standout for me. I would say this show was worth a watch for these two ladies alone.
The use of video was effective to help highlight historical points but it was the Curie’s lab from designer Rose Montgomery that I was impressed with. I am just sorry that it wasn’t a larger set rather than being hidden in a metal staircase.
Overall, there was enough here to keep me entertained and to bring my London trip to a positive conclusion.
