I understand that as a marketing strategy, these can be effective. However from a punter's point of view I wish producers would just go back to making the announcement when all the details such as theatres and dates can be revealed.

…and remove the need for a layer of vacuous theatre bloggers dining out on having a ‘press release of a press release’ sent to them to exclusively reveal (at the same time as all the others)? Wouldn’t the whole theatre economy collapse? What on earth would people chat about in the Theatre Cafe/Bar/Stand (delete the insolvent ones, I can’t keep up). How on earth did theatre PR function before low quality silhouettes could be teased with tricky teasers like “It rhymes with Ronnie & Slide” or “From supermarket to superstar”?

I think it's a reflection of the social media world we live in, which requires constant updates and content with no actual content. And it appeals to the vanity of those who think they are ahead of the curve because they heard about something before it went mainstream. That gives a feeling of ownership or at least connection with a project if they've cracked the clues, so they take more interest.
But I'm in my forties and find it all a bit tedious, but I'm realistic enough to understand why they do it. And despite being a cynical old fart who can see the strings, and who has just accused others of vanity, I too get a kick out of thinking I'm 'in the know' when I hear about something early.
From an old fashioned point of view, they effectively get to announce things more than once.

The current approach almost hints at a lack of confidence on the part of producers... Just ANNOUNCE it! It’s all about mailing lists. Announce breadcrumbs and get people to sign up for your mailing list to find out the full details. Annoying, yes, but it’s the reality nowadays.

Announce breadcrumbs and get people to sign up for your mailing list to find out the full details. Annoying, yes, but it’s the reality nowadays. That wouldn't be so bad if that actually worked. But every show I've signed up for has always been the last to send me the information. By the time they've emailed it through I've seen it via news sites, social media etc. Sometimes it can take days for an email from the official show account.
