Seems like this is a hellish (genuinely no pun intended) night at the theatre based on social media reports of audience behaviour... I used to work it when it was in London and even though the script and plot are absolute garbage, I developed a kind of stockholm syndrome fondness for it after seeing it for the 120th time, so I booked a ticket for when the tour comes near London. Now I already regret it.

Was anyone here introduced to the songs of Meatloaf by the show? Nobody? In that case I strongly, STRONGLY recommend Meatloaf's albums, particularly his debut album "Bat out of Hell". Later albums are great with new writers even with songs not written by the very recently departed Jim Steinman.

Some places quite well, others like Stockton... not so much. That is mental. Stockton?! Why Stockton? Someone must know someone. I've worked there and... the Stockton Globe I'm guessing? Seriously? 4 weeks at Manchester Opera House then Stockton?! How long have you worked in showbiz? The Stockton Globe only re-opened on 7 September...47 years after its last live performance! BooH will be its first week long engagement, and that isn't until February. Plenty of time yet.

Now I already regret it. I was reading some of these comments last night. People swigging from bottles of wine in the auditorium, scuffles, someone getting a drink thrown over them for telling people to be quiet. Loads more examples. I've never seen this show and reading all this I think I will give it a miss. I am sick of shows being spoilt by the behaviour of selfish people in the audience.

I saw the show over 30 times in London and never once had an issue with audience etiquette. I was there for both opening shows in Manchester on September 11th and was by disgusted by the utter contempt and disrespect shown by those sitting around me. People were singing loudly, drinking and fighting!!! I'm hoping that the crowds improve once it moves venue - I think the fact it was a 'home crowd' who do have a sense of ownership over the show didn't help matters. I'm hoping the Oxford audience will be less disruptive. I think they've started making an announcement at the start of the show people not to sing but there has to be a more effective way of communicating that this is NOT a biographical rock concert. It's really bad optics for the show, and I know a lot of people who have been put off booking tickets.

Saw a seating plan for tonight and more empty seats than full ones. Must be very disheartening for the performers.

Very excited for my trip to Oxford tomorrow but so few seats sold. I can literally have my choice of anything but the central block in the front stalls. Fair play that Fri & Sat are practically sell outs but will this pattern sustain the tour. I guess Wicked is still running on the same pattern of sales.

I suspect q a few people will be coming up from London at the end of the week, hence the better sales. I’m up for the Saturday matinee as it’s my last chance to see it this side of Christmas.

Well this was a treat! I really wasn’t expecting a lot, with worries of downsizing and hearing of major script revisions (for the better 🤣) Pleased to say that anything that had changed is a change for the better. I’m particularly taken with cutting ‘In The Land of the Pigs’ and Raven opening the show with ‘Love & Death’. It is kind of her story rather than Strats, and her rebellion too, so makes more sense. Kellie Gnauk on as Raven did a fantastic job as did Neighbours Craig Maclachlan as Strat…sorry, Glenn Adamson. Slightly goofier than any previous Strat and the surfer look really works. He sounds an awful lot like Jon Bon Jovi in his lower register, and like some sort of holy rock god at the top. I struggle to ‘love’ anyone other than Andrew Polec in the role, but this guy was very likeable. Lovely theatre in Oxford, so many nooks and crannies, and staircases to sneak down to access a better seat. 😬

Do we know why they decided to do a rewrite? I saw it (and still loved it!) but was caught by surprise at some of the book changes.
Do we think the ‘In The Land of the Pig’ scene was cut for story purposes or simply because the set might be too difficult for some venues?

I think the ‘kill off the gay’ story thread was always problematic, and as nothing at all was flown in during the show, I suspect that yes, it makes it a lot easier to tour without hanging bodies from the flies!

Yeah I agree, it surprised me but I definitely think I enjoyed the storyline more now - him being killed off never felt that necessary - never been a fan of the ‘bury your gays’ trope & I'm glad they’ve gotten rid of it.

Interval here at the matinee in Oxford. Very pleased to report that the audience is very very well behaved so far. Such a difference to when we saw it in Manchester!

I was there last night and it was an entirely different experience. The audience were on best behaviour, and the scaled down set looked much better on a smaller stage. The lighting/sound/FX were also far superior to those in the Manchester. The whole cast have really settled into their new roles, and the production felt tight and pacy. Bat is back to it’s best!

It really does have the best sound design I have ever heard in the theatre. They get around radio mic issues by switching to handhelds at key points and nobody questions it because the rest of the show is just as nonsensical.

Great to have Bat back in London, and a great atmosphere there tonight.
