My university are putting on a concert version of Chess on 11th May. I’m in the (rather large!) orchestra If anyone would like the link, let me know and I’ll send it over via message!

A last minute recommendation for this superb show which fully justified my trip from Kent for the opening performance on Wednesday afternoon, amateur musical theatre at its absolute finest. They even had a full size carriage on stage. Similarly Beauty and the Beast at Erith Playhouse which I saw tonight (off to Bristol on Saturday for an Oklahoma! at the Redgrave Theatre there.) Best Little Whorehouse in Texas is at the Elgiva Chesham next month, followed by Seussical Musical at Hampton Hill Theatre and Follies at the John Mackintosh Arts Centre at London Oratory School Near Fulham Broadway.

I see the Wimbledon Light Opera Society are doing Follies later this month.
Does anyone have any intel on what sort of standard WLOS produces for these sort of shows?

Here's a rare one.
Cowes Amateur Operatic & Dramatic Society on the Isle of Wight are presenting Sir Tim Rice/Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber's The Likes Of Us at the Trinity Theatre from Thursday 12th to Sunday 16th June. Includes a Saturday matinee which I've booked.

Sunday in the Park (SEDOS) does anyone know what the seating is like at Wheateaf Hall? Pics show a flat hall floor but I wonder if they will put in some tiers. Anyhelp will be greatly appreciated
Edit: Sedos are excellent at responding to emails, the seating is not raised but the stage is.

I've seen almost 100 amateur musicals, including many youth theatre shows, in the last 5 years and I've never once been disappointed with the standard of performance. Love Never Dies amateur UK premiere at Wolverhampton earlier this month was way better than last years's concert version at Drury Lane, as was Wimbledon's 2022 Calendar Girls in comparison with the recent (revised much for the worse) professional touring production.

SEDOS are company in residence at the Bridwell Theatre but GEOIDS have Saturday Night Fever there on some of the same dates which may account for the move to Wheatsheaf Hall. I see they are also doing two performances of Sunday... in Southwold's outdoor Thorington Theatre on successive Sunday afternoons - 28 July and 4 August at 3pm. I'd love to see it there but sadly not a practical journey for me. SEDOS is back at the Bridewell with You're A Good Man Charlie Brown from 9-13 July.

Follies (WLOS)
A really enjoyable amateur production of Stephen Sondheim’s Follies, put on by the Wimbledon Light Opera Society.
Having enjoyed so many of these wonderful songs - I’m Still Here, Losing My Mind and Could I Leave You? to name a few - in the recent Old Friends revue, this was a must-see for me.
The company did a great job but it was Elizabeth Burton’s Sally and Sarah Grey’s Phyllis that really impressed. Special mentions for Scott Butler as Buddy and Laarni Cornista-Samuelsson as Carlotta also.
It’s a shame the National’s revival of it came before I truly discovered my love for Sondheim; that cast would have been incredible. Hopefully there will be a professional revival elsewhere in the coming years.

I'm hoping to see up to 9 of the 11, only excluding Belfast and Glasgow, but for some venues depending on what's available at a matinee when booking opens. Minack in Cornwall is a must but probably the most challenging to do as a day trip from Kent. Here's an ambitious production for an amateur musical theatre society. Riverside Players present The Sound Of Music outdoor in the grounds of Eynsford Castle in Kent for 10 performance between August 3rd and 10th. Booking through Ticket Source. The Castle is 10 minutes walk from Eynsford Railway Station which is on the line between Bromley South and Sevenoaks, and there's car parking 5 minutes walk from Castle.

Sunday in the park with George - SEDOS. So many superlatives can be used to describe this production. Will de Renzy-Martin was hypnotic as George, manic but with growing self awareness. One of the best ive seen. The 12 piece band, complete with easels as music stands played the orchestrations beautifully. Robert J Stanex is a director with great imagination and brought new light to the peice, pun intended. A large cast, divided into 2, one for each act. This gave the chance for each to observe and comment from the sidelines. Finishing the hat took on a new meaning, 3 dimensional who knew? The choreographed Chromolume sequence was stunning. Two days later and im still thinking about it. Thank you SEDOS for a great evening. Two performances are planned for July and August at the Thorington Theatre. Go go go! www.thoringtontheatre.co.uk/events/sunday-in-the-park

New revival of Spring Awakening at the Phoenix Arts Club August 23rd to 25th.
Not long after the anniversary concert staging at Victoria Palace in June, it seems another revival is being mounted next month by Taylor Jay Productions. The cast is made up of mostly recent drama school graduates and current students after a quick look on Instgaram (@taylorjayproductions). The cast is led by Olivia Mae Ward, Callum Bultitude, and Elliot Butler. Hopefully this run will get a transfer at a later date after no sign of the Almedia production from 2021/2022 having any future life beyond a very limited cinema screening. Thoughts on the space and cast?

I don't really think it's a revival if it's just three nights at the Phoenix, which is a cabaret venue. More likely just small-scale fringe concert put on by one of the recent graduates. But good for them though!

To be clear, it's an amateur production. Which isn't to say that it won't be great! But I do think that should be disclosed. The cast are paying for the privilege of performing in this, rather than being paid. About the production: www.taylorjayproductions.com/platform

Their approach comes across as slightly condescending on Am Dram in thinking this is some new model of doing shows or people finding a place in the industry. Many great actors that have used am dram as a avenue for them adjusting post drama school, network or a way to keep up skills while figuring out what they want to do and then having successful professional careers. As noted they should be more careful in reading their license on properly acknowledging the amateur license: To be clear, it's an amateur production. Which isn't to say that it won't be great! You can do more with an established society in bigger theatres with bigger budget for a lot less than they’re charging…

It looks like am dram masquerading as fringe in order to get some central London exposure and a CV credit to be honest. Not something I'd go and see, but good luck to them.

I see a lot of sedos stuff but their current offerings don’t appeal. However they are generally of a very high standard. They usually perform at the Bridewell which is a great space. If the musical appeals it’s probably worth a try.

The Color Purple by sedos is half sold out in one day - anyone else planning on going to see it? Yes booked as soon as it went on sale in order to get my preferred front row seat - only five available as the right hand side of row A is accessible seating not bookable online. Latecomers or crew usually sit there. Not only do SEDOS put on amateur production of the highest quality, Color Purple didn't make it to London in its last professional production so not seen on stage in London for a decade. I'd expect a sell out.
