Fawlty Towers - Apollo

It was full on Saturday night, but I was surprised to get such a good rush seat in the stalls.  It was an Only Fools and Horses type audience - a fair bit of shouting out "panto style" by some people.  I'm not sure how many people will be repeat visitors - once was enough for me, though it was perfectly enjoyable. Some of the humour shows its age and the best part of the whole play was the second half "Don't mention the war" sketch, which got less cheers than perhaps it might have done a few years ago.  The sections that got the loudest laughs and applause were those that were just really well written. I came away from it thinking that the writers are the stars of the show, though there were some good comic performances from most on stage.  I'd probably rate it 3.5/5 - I felt understudy Basil wasn't quite Fawlty enough until the pace picked up in the second half and the actors got a chance to play more with the material.
