I get vocal gymnastics not being to everyone's taste, but to say Cedric's been in the business for 5 minutes just...isn't true. Then he REALLY should know better. I made allowances for it in GUYS & DOLLS (given that the musical arrangement was a bit more 'gospelized') but "War Is A Science"? I think I'll avoid his appearances going forward. We get it. He can do vocal runs. Now how about singing the damn melody that the composer wrote? Careful. Riffing is not an error. It’s not a fault. It’s a stylistic choice - and one that embraces a particular musical history. It may not be to your taste, and that’s fine. But to say that a performer who has made that artistic choice “REALLY should know better”, and to suggest that it’s disrespectful to have made that choice is not a good road to go down. Personally, I really enjoy it, but understand that some people prefer a rendition which is exactly as written - let’s not label one right, and the other wrong

Yes, it is a choice. Never said it wasn’t.
But it’s a choice made out of ego and bad taste when it only serves the singer and not the song.

Don't know if I'm getting senile but I didn't feel there was excessive whooping and cheering on Monday night and I usually hate that kind of thing - looking at you BGT! Certainly the audience was enthusiastic, but rightly so as it was an amazing concert. I thought the audience reaction added to the atmosphere. You would have hated the Cool Rider concert which was Pippin x 10 for audience reaction. I was there last night (front of dress circle) and yes, there was some cheering and whooping, but it was a concert, and I felt the actors were encouraging it at some points which added to the atmosphere and excitement in the theatre. It certainly didn’t spoil my enjoyment. It would be different if was a fully staged show of course, but it wasn’t. It was a concert!

You would have hated the Cool Rider concert which was Pippin x 10 for audience reaction. I think Cool Rider is quite unique in that sense, thought. It’s built (for legal reasons…) as a quasi-parody where the audience is encouraged to sing along, shout quotes in unison, and ultimately celebrate the campness of the show. Pippin not so much, though I do think a celebration concert audience can be excused for some cheering and whooping more so than a regular theatre audience. I hate bad audience behaviour usually, last night I was a lot less annoyed by it than usual.

I have played Charles in Pippin and the music for that number is not enhanced by interpolated riffs and embellishments.
The score reflects the regimented nature of the character and his approach to life as a direct contrast to his rather wafty son.
So riffs are not a valid choice for this song.

But as Patricia Hodge says in "Miranda," it was all "such fun" and I personally felt the embellishments added to the atmosphere of fun. You could easily read the embellishment last night as a way of exhibiting majesty to dazzle Jac Yarrow's innocent dopey unembellished Pippin all the more by sheer force of character. And you could also read it as competition between all the seducers of Pippin for his attention, as all the players, bar Pippin, seems to be under the Leading Player's sway to a degree. The idea that there's only one way to do something sounds a bit like the end of variety and directing as a profession. Might as well just give the Director's job to an AI if there's only one way to see the character.

Nothing I said limits the freedom of the director to create. But you have to respect the score and the contribution that makes to creating the character.
Respecting doesn't mean slavish recreation of the original. But if you go too far from what was written, you have to expect comment and criticism.

I think vocal runs can be thrilling to hear when they fit the song and the moment - but when they are thrown in just to get an audience reaction and deflect from the lyrics and melody rather than enhance it (as was pointedly clear in this instance), thats a problem.

I think they’re often used to disguise shortcomings with the voice. Can’t hold a note? Sing lots of notes.

Forgot to note earlier, Amonik Melaco is an incredible dancer, couldn't take my eyes off of him.

Forgot to note earlier, Amonik Melaco is an incredible dancer, couldn't take my eyes off of him. Also couldn't take my eyes off him and most of that was the dancing... he was superb in the Drew McOnie jazz Nutcracker at Christmas too.

Forgot to note earlier, Amonik Melaco is an incredible dancer, couldn't take my eyes off of him. Absolutely agree with this, a standout from the production for me also. I went on Tuesday after hearing positive feedback from Monday. Once I knew it wouldn't be a book in hand reading I was excited to go. Had a wonderful time. Crowd around me generally very well behaved too, only joining in with songs when invited to do so and not a phone in sight until the curtain call. I also was blown away by Zizi's solo number and hope to get to see her in a role where she can shine like that again soon.

Glad I wasn't the only one, he was a huge standout, just the way he performed the choreography was incredible.
I have no idea how Zizi can dance like that, and yet her vocals stay perfect!

It's in the genes. The whole family are the same including auntie Bonnie who can still do the splits in her 50s.

I thought this was absolutely delightful. Pippin is an excellent musical anyway, but almost exclusively now performed in small-scale and stripped back productions, with little in the way of a set, so this concert version fits right in. Even better, it didn't suffer from the cuts that so many productions have. The concert vibe also suits much of the abstraction and ambiguity in the show. Sound on Tuesday was fantastic. Yes there was the odd missed sound cue, yes there were some annoying screamers in the audience, yes not every song was perfect for every performer, but as an overall package for a show only performed for two nights, this was as good as you're likely to get. Those of you raving about being Amonik Melaco should have been a Heathers' fan! We got him first. This is the type of concert production that I wish could have a future life, but I know the demand isn't there. Well done to everyone involved.
