So, Groundhog Day opens in Melbourne on 24 January. Is anybody on this board in Oz going to see it tomorrow, if not tomorrow then tomorrow... ? When the news was announced, I did take a look at flight options. I figured it was one indulgence too far, but I'd love to hear from anybody who is going (or travelling) to see it! If you are, enjoy.

I will report back when I can. |

I saw the show last night, literally on Groundhog Day. Really enjoyed it, surprising myself a bit.
I haven't been following the details of this production, but based on looking at a few photos online, I think it's a replica of the London production. So I won't go into detail about the production design, but I loved the creativity of the sets and all that.
Andy Karl and the rest of the cast were great. The stamina required for the lead role, and the discipline and coordination required from the cast (and indeed the crew) to manage all the repetitions and variations live - amazing. The drunken guys in the bar were hilarious. Elise McCann as Rita was great.
I have only vague memories of the film, and they weren't all that positive. Something about a jerk who becomes a bit less of one, whose 'redemption' is finally succeeding in bedding that beautiful woman? Meh. I went along with somebody else who wanted to go, but I wasn't sure if I would be into it. I did end up feeling for Phil and cheering him on on his journey though. And the show does delve into some interesting themes and questions.
(On a slight tangent, for better or worse I can see why affluent white men are still appealing to writers as protagonists. Without having to deal with sexism, racism, etc, the characters can thus more efficiently 'get on with' facing a range of other issues, such as their own flaws or an existential crisis or whatever.)
It's nice to see a musical where the book scenes and the songs are both vital pieces of the puzzle. Plenty of those scenes are 'show pieces' as much as the songs are.
The show got darker than I had expected at times. I was all right with it, but if you're local and are considering going, definitely check the content warning in the FAQs (https://groundhogday.com.au/frequently-asked-questions/) if you think that certain heavy themes might trouble you.

Apologies for the delay in posting the following.
My mother and I travelled to Melbourne on Thursday for a wedding on the Sunday. We saw this on the night we arrived. We simply purchased tickets at the door.
My mother was not (in any way) familiar with the show. She has never seen the film; she's not even familiar with the Groundhog Day phrase.
It was at this point that I realised how difficult it is to explain to a novice.
I'm not sure how far into its 13 week run, but the show is in fine form.
It's a complex, tight running show. Andy Carl as Phil Connors is consistent and so hard working.
The show is pretty much a carbon copy of the second reincarnation of the Old Vic, on a bigger stage.
From the start, they had the audience who were enjoying it, laughing throughout at Phil Connor's plight. By intermission, my mothers frustrated for him!
The whole cast is incredibly hard working,
The sound was excellent.
After the final bows, as the audience exited the theatre onto the street, they we pumping fake snow (foam) over those on the street.
Unlike the Old Vc production, they were selling merchandise- T-shirts, mugs, key rings, magnets, caps and posters.

I've never been to the Princess Theatre but what's it like? When I was in Melbourne years ago I went to the Regent Theatre to see Priscilla, it was similar to our theatres except it had leather seats. They also sold an ice cream in a cone which had chocolate covered on it.

I loved the 2016 Old Vic production, but looking at the clips it looks and sounds like its gone through a lot of changes - not just the absence of the revolve. I really hope the West End transfer and/or UK tour goes ahead soon!

This was a very tight and slick production!
Vocally excellent. I don't quite know how Andy Karl keeps up his stamina.
Have seen the show tree times now (the original and return of the Old Vic productions and now the Melbourne production, the revolve is not missed and the shown is not any weaker without it.

I really enjoyed this production on a recent trip to Melbourne. Andy Karl was fantastic and Elise McCann makes an incredible Rita too. The score was weaved so well with the book. Safe to say that this cast and show have a new fan in myself

ceebee - you (and maybe others) might be interested to hear that Groundhog Day will have a German production in autumn, even with English surtitles. Not quite as far to fly as Australia
