He made it to the grand old age of 95 but sadly Joss Acland has passed away.
I remember him as Peron in the original production of Evita. He was an authoritative presence, getting the character's mix of power and cunning exactly right, not the stooge he has sometimes represented as - although she undoubtedly helped him to get more popularity he was already a made man when they met.
Acland had a distinguished career on stage, film and television but it's on the stage where he actually played most of his leading roles. RIP.

I saw him twice but unfortunately not to good effect. First as Falstaff in Trevor Nunn's productions of Henry IV 1 & 2. He had not been Nunn's first choice and he walked out of rehearsals at one point because he didn't approve of Nunn's methods (specifically improvisation to develop the character). Nunn's production was also very literal and dull. Then shortly after I saw him in Peter Hall's flop musical Jean Seberg. A pity as I saw him in several good roles on TV.

He was outstanding as Juan Peron in Evita. I was young (very!) when I saw it and I still recall how menacing and sinister he was in the role which is, indeed, how it should be played. That I still remember his portrayal 40-odd years later is, I hope, how any actor would like to be remembered.

I'd forgotten he played Jerry Westerby in the definitive Alec Guinness TV series "Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy". That is perfect casting. What a pity they missed out the second part of the trilogy "The Honourable Schoolboy" where Westerby is the leading character and jumped straight to "Smiley's People". I assume they did that because they didn't have the budget to film in Hong Kong.
