... 40% of A&E attendances are inappropriate ... I think with that statistic you are conflating "inappropriate" meaning unnecessary, because the patient did not really need medical help, with inappropriate because the patient could not get a timely appointment with their GP or the bit of the health service they actually and properly needed. I am not conflating anything thanks Medical care in this country is free to access And particularly in A&E is based on patient perception of needs What the staff and professionals think became irrelevant years ago What I can tell you is that most of what is inappropriate doesn’t need to see anyone Does one day of sore throat need to attend A&E? Does one day of sore throat need to attend a GP?

McKellen has now withdrawn from the tour. I just got my form from ATG, have requested a full refund. With all due respect to the cast and creatives, on this occasion we did book for the actor.

I agree. In the programme for The Syndicate, which I bought at the Alex last week, the full-page ad for Player Kings has "Ian McKellen" in a large font above the title. If they're using a name to sell a show, it's only right to refund people who took them up on that proposition and who no longer wish to go. That said, it's a cracking production, so I'd encourage ticket-holders to give it a go still.

Not unexpected news, but still a shame. I wish him well. His commitment to trying to get people into theatres is admirable, especially at his age.

I’ve requested a refund too, not sure if our local theatre will honour that though. I’d never have booked it without Ian McKellen, no matter how good his understudy is.

No refunds accepted by Theatre Royal Norwich, indeed I even asked for credit to my account if refunds werent an option and that was also refused.

I never expected ATG to be so easy with it, to be honest. You had a choice - credit to your account or a refund. As my partner had paid, and he doesn't often go to the theatre, I opted for a refund. At the Bristol Hippodrome prices were hugely inflated, par to a big West End-show visiting, and after McKellen had withdrawn they had dropped considerably. There were even £15 tickets at the back of the stalls available.

The producers should cover refunds at Norwich, who are they ? ATG ? I couldn't really recommend this play to the casual theatre-goer without McKellen, it is by far the least interesting production directed by Robert Icke that I've seen.

No, Theatre Norwich are not ATG. I was meant to go to an ATG-venue, and they sent out refund-emails immediately after the announcement. Refund was processed within 24 hours.

Genuinely surprised that ATG didn’t go down the “you book the show, not the star” route.
Was tempted to give this a go after all but now McKellen’s out, won’t bother. The tickets in Birmingham are still on the expensive side.

The tickets in Birmingham are still on the expensive side. That's why I was surprised, but they have been really easy to deal with. Options were either a credit to your account, which I personally would use up eventually, or a full refund (minus booking costs) - as my partner paid I went for the full refund, as he doesn't go to the theatre often.

An update on Norwich, received an email today stating that the Norwich managment had been looking at ways to address people who had booked "an A plus" priced ticket, which apparently I did, and was at the time in March priced at 69 pounds, and because I had "paid extra to be closer to see Ian Mckellan" how the managment could issue some kind of gesture for his abscence.
A partial refund of 11 pounds.... to bring the A plus tickets in line with the A price tickets. So only those who paid top price will be getting any kind of partial refund? And 11 pounds off a 69 pounds ticket with the big name star who was front and centre and his name used to sell the production, now not appearing? Not very impressed and 11 pounds off to only those who originally booked the top price tickets only to me seems a bizarre decision for them to make. I have told them so in a follow up email.

I suppose it might depend on how it was marketed. Theatre Royal Newcastle (also not an ATG venue) didn't give me any trouble, but then they did send out emails with titles like "Ian McKellen's triumphant return to Newcastle' and the show was advertised as 'Ian McKellen in Player Kings' so it would be a bit difficult to tell people they didn't book to see a specific actor.

Surely everyone except those in the very cheapest seats had “paid extra to be closer” ?

If it’s any consolation it’s on at the Alexandra in Birmingham this week, an ATG venue, where the top price is still £175.

I could only manage the first half and actually thought it was a pretty good stand alone play, nearly 2 hours in length and I debated at the interval wether to stay for about more of the same in length, but told myself I had had enough. Look I'm really not the biggest fan of Shakespeare as I find you really have to switch on and follow things very closely and the dialogue and 1 hour 50 straight through was enough for me.
Mckellans understudy pretty good in the Falstaff role. Some funny moments and lines, I especially liked the moment at the near end of part 1 with Falstaff and the curtain which drew many laughs and all in all i dis enjoy this as it seems did most of the people and would even be interested in the second part, just not right after the first given the length! To be fair it did seem to zip along
A word on attendance, stalls were mostly full, some empty seats here and there but pretty solid, I understand the circle was less well attended, it seems given the refusal to give a refund in Mckellans absence that people came to see it anyway, of course the interesting thing to see would be how many would have gone along had TRN offered refunds, and that we shall never know.

I find it mildly amusing that Norwich theatre are making no acknowledgment on their socials of the show being here this week.
Saw it last night. It was fine. Relieved when Hal and Hotspur pulled out daggers to fight with so I didn't have to endure more gun shots. The modernisation really doesn't add anything for me.
I liked the cast. But it certainly wasn't worth the £83 I paid, it's easy to see Shakespeare for way less.
