Those of "a certain age" will recall another vocally miscast Fred in the RSC's KMK in 1987 - Paul Jones. I revisited the recording this week. Ouch.

The great shame is that the rest of the cast are fantastic, Block especially, so he'd look bad on the best of days but when up against a group this talented he's really climbing an uphill battle. That's the crux of the matter the bar is so high with SJ Block & Onuorah (both marvellous singers). Dunbar doesn't even come close to Butterworth or Stemp. It's all about contrast, now if he was in the cast of London Tide he would be just be just below the bar ( truly, some of the worst vocal performances I have seen this year). But he is not & having him in this production seems nonsensical from a singing stand point, he stands out like a sore thumb. However, I agree he does the book well, sadly this is a musical. If his understudy gets the opportunity to walk the boards in this role it could be a show to look out for.

Personally I don't understand all the criticism around Adrian Dunbar. I thought he was perfectly adequate in his performance. Afterall we all knew he wasn't a MT performer so maybe some people's expectations are a bit high.

He entirely met my expectations unfortunately.

What Adrian Dunbar lacks in singing prowess, he makes up for in energy and comic timing. I think the criticism of him is a little harsh - he's performing alongside some excellent musical theatre actors.

Saw the matinee and he was better than I expected, although given the comments I’d seen on here (and having once heard him give an impromptu rendition of I Left My Heart in San Francisco in a jazz club in Liverpool) my expectations were low.
He’s supported amply by an excellent SJB in Wunderbar and delivers a very wry Where Is The Life That Late I Led, but he just can’t get to grips with the reprise of So In Love which should be the emotional crescendo of the show. You can almost hear how it should sound in the way he doesn’t sing it.
But in terms of the book? He’s fantastic, and has absolutely wonderful chemistry with Stephanie. There’s no way it would be selling to even the extent that it is without him.
Elsewhere I’d really struggle to find fault. Charlie Stemp has relatively little to do but I think he’s the closest thing we’ve got to Jimmy Cagney so I’d frankly watch him stand still. It’s a pleasure and an honour to listen to SJB. Brush Up Your Shakespeare is treated with suitable elan, and Too Darn Hot is put over excellently.
I’d go again!

Unfortunately the show has been cancelled tonight! Apparently an issue with something snapping and it needing a welder

Saturday night preview performance did not take place for 'technical reasons'. Audience entry to auditorium was delayed until after 7.15 - a slightly ominous sign! At 7.40 director Bartlett Sher appeared and apologised that there would be a 10-15 minute delay to the start due to a faulty revolve, but free drinks were available in the foyer. At 8.10 producer Howard Panter appeared and apologised that the performance was now cancelled as a fitting was broken that needed a welder to repair.

I was there this evening and booked through TodayTix, does anyone know how long it takes them to issue refunds/credit vouchers? Looking to rebook ASAP for this!

They'll issue credit to your TodayTix account. I was there too - such a disappointment but decent of them to shout a round of drinks.

Stagedoor refunds already processed for last night's cancellation. I've rebooked for two weeks time.

My refund is on its way, but I´m trying to see if the Young Barbican discount can be used for a later date.

I talked to Howard Panter afterwards and didn´t know it was him til I read this. Goodness me!

That is the best dealt with cancellation I've heard about in a while! Yes it was handled very well. No BS or hiding away - both director and producer took to the mic to explain what was happening to the audience. Was very impressed, along with the speed of my refund, which meant I booked again within twelve hours of the cancellation.
