Didn't see a thread for this one, but it finishes tomorrow so possibly a waste of time!
I saw this on Thursday evening as I try to catch anything that's on at the Turbine because it's a special venue for me.
This is billed as Faking Bad: The Unauthorised parody Methsical. It's a parody of the hugely popular Breaking Bad TV show and it retells the entire 5 seasons of that show in two hours on the Turbine stage. A very big challenge!
A challenge to which it rises successfully! No idea how, but it cuts away large swathes of the story to distills what's left down to a fast moving, accurate, ridiculous retelling of the tale of Walter White.
Four actors, all of whom have a LOT of work to do. Nikki Biddington and Rob Gathercole provide most of the comic relief, over the top comedy madness BUT no joke is the quality of their voices. Comedy musicals can be forgiven for casting poorer voices but not her, all four players are fantastic.
Natalie Winsor does a lot of heavy lifting switching between characters who have to be loud and proud, which she does really well.
Richard Costello is Walter White and is rarely off the stage for longer than a few seconds. He is a superbly assured performer and you feel in capable hands anytime he's leading the madness. He has a tough job steering a show that asks the audience to have a knowledge of the TV show to 'get' everything but seems equally aware of the parts that need to be over explained or covered up when they don't hit. He feels like a great improv performer or experienced MC who can really control the pace of a performance.
I'm not a massive fan of the TV show but have watched it so was able to spot how many bits are in there for fans. The real test for a musical is whether or not I'm singing the songs on the train home and, with apologies to the other users of the Northern Line, I was. I really enjoyed it and it's yet another show for the Turbine that will stay in my memory.
It ends tomorrow so I don't know if this will help anyone but if you're reading this and happen to be near the Turbine tomorrow, I don't think you'll regret this one at all.
