This happened on Thu eve performance and Freddie looked hacked off. I wouldn’t want to cross her This was a different performance to mine but they (Freddie Love) looked pretty miffed. Don't blame them really as they absolutely nailed the Mercury charisma and the end of Bo Rhap is virtually iconic. Would enjoy seeing Freddie do other stuff as there is a beautiful operatic tone to their voice, not dissimilar to Mercury's. I saw it in preview, so I think it's safe to say it's happened at lots of performances.

it was speculated whether Tom Francis would sing Sunset Boulevard at the NHS celebration concert tonight (he didn't) buuut JFOD fans will be pleased to know the concert opened with 'Heroes', pretty much the same arrangements as the show (Matt Brind also supervising music in this) and more than half the JFOD band was part of tonight's orchestra! so it sounded 100% as fantastic as it did at the Old Vic. the amazing Jo Foster was also a soloist and gave a beautiful rendition of 'I Wanna Dance with Somebody'

Forgot to come back and do this previously...
I'd like to thank all the commenters throughout this thread who prepared me for quite how appalling this production was. I went in with the right frame of mind and managed to be entertained by just how lazy and offensive I found it. That, and a pint of rum and coke at the interval, were just about enough to steel me for the second act, rather than going home. It was also lovely to be reminded of just what a jolly jester Thatcher was. That japester!!!

It always makes me wonder what pronouns some of the flamboyant singers from that era would have used or how they might have identified. Bowie always seemed to be ahead of the curve somehow. I once heard the joke what came between Glam Rock and New Romantic and the answer is Freddie. Again the person playing Freddie can identify any which way they like but the performer had a very good voice and was well cast for the role which is all I care about. Please stop trying to ‘trans’ dead people. There were transvestites and transsexuals in existence when Freddie Mercury was alive; he was neither. He was a gay man. He was not particularly effeminate, even - he liked masculine men and he dressed and behaved in masculine ways. Glam rock was a fashion when Queen started their careers and so they followed it. Freddie was by all accounts very relieved when the fashion changed and he didn’t have to wear that get-up anymore. His favourite outfit when he was at home relaxing was a track suit and trainers. And we do actually know this for sure because his live-in personal assistant and his partner both wrote memoirs after his death, and they both included lots of candid photos.

This. Stop looking at yesterday with todays filter. None of these concepts were commonplace in Freddie's lifetime.

Wow, this thread went a bit off track... Luckily when the transfer is announced those who didn't enjoy it can save their money for something else instead.

Sorry folks. Went on a Freddie Mercury hyperfixation binge a couple of years ago, and as a result people trying to re-write his personal life is particularly annoying to me!!
We truly don’t need to guess about this stuff about him because everyone even tangentially connected to him wrote a book! And the contents of his house just went up for auction. He actually told people before he died that he didn’t mind them cashing in on their stories and memorabilia. He had a pragmatist’s approach to it all and could be rather cynical.
To bring it slightly back on topic, he was cynical about Geldof’s motivations for Live Aid, and thought he was in it as much for the fame as helping people. Unsurprising that the musical doesn’t really mention that!

And Geldof was initially cynical about the musical itself, but grew to love it and help develop it. Isn't this just life playing out though?

Unsurprising that the musical doesn’t really mention that! Freddie's inner circle was very protective of him when his health was failing and he made generous provision for them all in his will. All their recollections that I've ever seen of them talking about him have been very positive and affectionate. People may not realise that Queen had no commercial need to play Live Aid they had come off a hugely successful album "The Works" and the tour which included the then biggest gig ever when they played Rock In Rio. The Live Aid performance seemed to gather mythical status after Freddie died. Queen were always an amazing Live Band and their concerts were broadcast quite often. It was only when you stop and think that Live Aid wasn't a Queen audience it really struck you how amazing that performance was.

When people start posts with "rolling my eyes so hard at this" or generally telling people off because they simply "wonder" about something on a flippin messageboard it really turns me off listening to their response however well worded or well-researched.
Well worded and well-researched is all the response that's needed, and can keep the discussion going, without publicly humiliating someone and getting to be the boss who sent them to the naughty step.

Freddie I'd have never thought of as trans in any way. It was more he was so unique and flamboyant he might have identified as himself. What past legends might have identified as under today's rules we can only guess. Freddie who I've been a huge fan of his music and persona for over 40 years had what I considered his off stage quite quiet camp persona and that on stage very macho commanding presence. Also he changed his look when he cut his hair short and grew his moustache. There was a couple of years when the leotards had stopped before he got the moustache and vest - the classic LIve Aid look. But a lot of people just remember the Bohemian Rhapsody/We are the Champions very flamboyant outfits and then the vest and moustache 80's look. I rarely watch "Days of Our Lives" video as he is so gaunt and dying. I just prefer to remember the legend of him at his greatest.

@scarletmood , I remember a friend at school who was a big fan of Queen, but it was only when Freddie first appeared on a video on Top Of The Pops with his ultra-macho look (with the moustache) that my friend said nervously..."um...is he gay?" He'd thought nothing of it when Freddie was in jumpsuits, leotards or batwing shirt-blouses with long hair. It's interestingly complicated and contradictory when it comes to appearing masculine or feminine and what that means (and what it meant then, and now). Ru Paul had that useful line: "We're all born naked, and the rest is drag".

The majority of Queen's fanbase in Freddie's lifetime were likely hetrosexual males who had been fans from quite early on. The other band members in one of the many documentaries about them said mockingly people suddenly realised that Freddie was gay when I Want To Break Free video got banned in the US. They said the fact that he had named the band Queen might have been a clue before you even consider what his persona was.

There’s an ignore function on this board. You can save yourself from reading my opinions any time by using it. But then you’d miss out on the fun of appearing holier-than-thou and telling me off for how I express myself, so I doubt you’ll do that!

@scarletmood
Freddie was a bundle of contradictions, which is what makes him fascinating still.
😁 Like being a ‘unique’ individual who deliberately adopted the ‘Castro Clone’ style because it helped him blend in.
I think we sometimes forget just how different our culture is now to the 70s and 80s because of the way our media landscape has changed communication. Freddie could not have even imagined social media!

I'd say he had a damn good try: "Is this the real life? Is this just fantasy? Caught in a landslide, no escape from reality... Nothing really matters, anyone can see, nothing really matters to me."

Freddie I can imagine would have enjoyed collaborating with some of the modern artists but I don't think he'd have been a big fan of social media unless it was to release his music or his "inner circle who all had the pet names" would have been a private group on whatever platform. Like John Deacon in the band he was a more private individual whilst Brian and Roger would appear on TV programmes more readily and had higher profile partners. Anyway back to the LiveAid musical when will it be renamed and where is it transfering to in the West End. Also I hope it tours as it would be a huge success on a "Number 1" tour to the major cities.

Wow, this thread went a bit off track... Luckily when the transfer is announced those who didn't enjoy it can save their money for something else instead. Not necessarily all of them, if there is a transfer, I'm intending to take friends who didn't manage to see it this time so they can also howl with laughter. I'll be sure to pop back and campaign for the introduction of 0.5* if, as I suspect, that becomes necessary. ;-)

To continue to be annoyingly off topic, I am enjoying Robbie Williams on Instagram - he has been using it to showcase his visual art, make jokes, poll his followers for their favourite 80s films/songs, do art-collabs with other Instagram-artists, find deserving recipients of a flood of coordinated internet cuddles, and post pictures and videos of his pets. I can imagine Freddie getting well into #catsofinstagram and filling his grid with cat photos. And probably he’d have enjoyed the eye candy, but likely from a private account.

I agree with Freddie probably being into the felines on Instagram or maybe even his cats having their own profile. But when we think about two different eras are we thinking of Freddie at say 40 or the age he would have been now nearer 80.

Looking forward to hearing which theatre this is going in to... Me too. Any looking likely? Not sure what is free or when. I know they hoped to go straight into a theatre but apparently the venue fell through. I also suspect a rather different cast as some have gone off to do other things. But it’s a rather ensemble piece so not sure it matter too much.
