I went to a preview of The Substance last night. Not 'enjoyable' as an experience but really good film. Expect a lot of gore and disgusting visuals, I couldn't watch sometimes. Great to see Demi Moore back in top form, she's really beautiful so the premise was hard to believe but anyway. If you've seen the trailer you have some idea, but they kept all the gross stuff out of it so don't be fooled and I'd say avoid if you are squeamish. Saying all that, it is a film with a powerful message (purposely on your face) and I loved it. I'm due to see it on Wednesday and am very squeamish, so sounds like I'll be putting my hands over my eyes at multiple points! You will. also, I would suggest not to eat beforehand.

Saw Blink Twice last night.
Excellent directorial debut by Zoe Kravitz. Visually striking, and I thought the sound design was especially effective.
Story was obviously inspired by Epstein’s Island. Tense and disturbing, with a surprising ending.
Recommended.

Just seen The Substance and agree it’s not one to have a big meal before seeing, and it will put you off eating anything whatsoever while you watch it (certainly not chicken drumsticks anyway): I thought the first two hours were excellent, those last twenty minutes though: 🤢

Thankfully the screening I'm seeing starts at 17:50, so not my dinner time, but given all the positive reviews and the chance to hear from Demi Moore afterwards I couldn't pass up on it.

Yeah after much refreshing I managed to snag a ticket to the same screening right near the back and all the way to the side so it'll be a bad view but hey-ho. Very excited!

I'll also be off to the side but near the front (Honestly though, having sat almost everywhere in NFT1, back, front, in the middle and off to the side, I don't think there is a bad seat to be had).

The Substance was balls to the walls insane. Have to admit, I found it funnier than expected rather than being horrified. I think it could have lost 20 minutes and it wouldn't affected the quality.

No I know it won't be too bad but I sat in a similar seat for The Taste of Things (AKA Le Pot Au Feu) last year and it wasn't brilliant so I know what I'm in for.

I wasn’t even aware that Demi Moore was doing a q&a until I had an email from the BFi saying it had sold out: oh well, not mega devastating, I think The Substance is the first film I’ve seen her in since the days of GI Jane (30 years ago?)

I have very vague memories of her being in it very briefly, but it wasn’t exactly a masterpiece 🤣

Just got back from The Substance. The only research I did beforehand was watch the trailer which gives no hint at just how grotesque this is. I liked the message overall but thought it would have had more of an impact without all the comedy and insane antics, especially in the last 30 minutes. I have a very strong threshold for movie gore but I have to admit that I seriously regretted eating my chicken wrap in the first hour.

Whoops, I went to her Wikipedia entry to see which films of hers I'd seen and didn't notice the bit saying she was a producer, not an actor in that (and my memory of seeing Austin Powers is quite hazy now). So my bad!

Suddenly - after the summer film famine - there's a whole feast. Gone/going 3 days in a row so have just see Lee (way better than I feared, even with Kate Winslet), The Goldman Case and The Queen Of My Dreams; tomorow I have The Outrun & have also booked for My Old Ass.

Anyone else seen (subjected?) themselves to Megalopolis yet? Intensely weird, I don’t know if it works at all but I think I liked it?

I’ve just seen Megalopolis and thought it was pretty dreadful, an absolute mess, it boggled the mind to think it’s from the same person who made The Godfather and Apocalypse Now. There was no shape to the whole thing it just trundled on for nearly two and a half hours , a plethora of terrible cgi that looked like it was from a video game made 20 years ago and some real bottom of the barrel acting: it gained a point when Shia Lebeouf got shot up the arse with maybe the most pathetic little bow and arrow in the history of cinema near the end though🤣

Slightly belated, but I enjoyed The Substance overall, even if sometimes it veered from funny into silly. Demi Moore and Margaret Qualley were both fantastic.

On the subject of Megalopolis and Aubrey Plaza, I decided to try and wipe all memory of that and went to see My Old Ass. A lesson to myself to do more research before going to see stuff, I was expecting an updated female version of a Rogen/Franco or Stiller/Wilson film but what was served up was the sort of dull thing that Channel 5 stick on in the afternoon, pretty much a laugh free zone.

Well I did go see Megalopolis because I couldn’t get a refund- it is just as bad as everyone is saying. Utter drivel - scene setting was way too long and the message was superficial and done a thousand times before. Such a waste of good actors and money. I don’t know what Coppola was thinking tbh. Even Adam Driver was bad and I usually really like him!
