Even more excitement now that we know Sir Sam will be making a return to stage directing. I'd assume we will get the casting fairly soon and with Sam now attached he'd have star power to pull in names to be in the show.
With it opening late January would the rehersals start before or after Xmas do people think?

Sam Mendes directed The Motive and The Cue this year and he's done a fair bit of theatre directing in the last 5 to 10 years. At this point, his name isn't a big selling point.

Can’t wait! Do we know when exactly the pre-sale is? Signed up but judging by the recent experience the links are so unreliable.. better know the exact time and date in advance.

Besides, Sam Mendes' stage work is rarely very "starry"

I think they will some names in it, The Ferryman had Paddy Considine and The River had Dominic West for example. it seems that from the premise, it seems to be more female lead than previous Jez Butterworth plays. Wishful thinking on my part but I would love to see Jodie Whittaker return to the stage and perhaps something like this would be up her alley?

ATG + is 10am on Wed 18th Oct. Presale that day also, probably 12pm as per Love Theatre. General sale 12pm on Fri 20th Oct.

I take your first point about it not necessarily being a novelty anymore having him direct for stage in London, but if anything his track record is surely more likely to make people want to book - his past three shows here were: The Ferryman - total 5 star smash that sold out the Royal Court run within hours of going onsale and then a west end run with 2 extensions and cast changes plus a Broadway transfer and multiple Oliviers and Tonys. The Lehman Trilogy - 5 star smash at the NT, multiple West End and Broadway runs through many cast changes and a load of Tonys (plus Olivier noms) The Motive and the Cue - 5 star sellout smash at the NT, West End run confirmed, surely Broadway on the cards and I’d bet on a ton of award noms next year. Certainly to me that’s a big tick in the “I’m very very excited to see this” box

Maybe "star names" was the wrong word but it should guarantee a strong cast and would be the sort of role a lot of actors would express interest in. Especially as it looks like there are 3 good prominent female roles in it a lot of actresses would be very keen to try and get these.

Johnny Flynn, Mark Gatiss, Tuppence Middleton and Simon Russell Beale all have relatively notable profiles

Sam Mendes is a prestigious director. His name attached to anything gives it a quality kitemark, in my view.

For me it's Jerusalem and Lehman Trilogy but either way, saying that I am looking forward to this is an understatement.

I liked The Ferryman, but after all the hype I was massively disappointed with Jerusalem. Just didn’t get what the fuss was about.

I'm going to put some names out as a guess on casting. A starter for ten: Sally Hawkins, Ann Marie Duff, Laura Donnelly
