Even my husbands ears pricked up when I said Sinclair. He’s not a theatre buff but he’s a James Bind bore and e reminded me he was Bond’s kill in Casino Royale |

I'd booked when member booking opened months ago as though I'd never heard of the writer, the play sounded interesting. Now that its opening is nearer, it is of course receiving more publicity & I was interested to read a long article in this week's free Waitrose Weekend paper about Deborah Frances-White, who is apparently well-known for other work but not in areas I'd have come across (comedy and podcasts).

TY, alicechallice and apologies all: I did indeed confuse the 2 plays & all I can say in my defence is that until I've seen a play or heard more about it, the titles of new ones I've booked don't make much impression on me - though I have to concede that "Never Have I Ever" is quite catchy, whereas "The Inquiry" is very bland and uninformative. |

First preview of new play by Guardian journalist Harry Davies last night and what an underwhelming experience it was. Story is about the political and personal machinations around a judicial inquiry but it lacks any dramatic tension or theatricality whatsoever. Basically just people talking in spaces and it could have worked just as well as a radio play. Total waste of a good cast (Deborah Findlay, John Heffernan and Malcolm Sinclair) some of whom stumbled over their lines.
How this was green lit is beyond me - at least it was mercifully short, 2 hours including 20 minute interval. Not recommended at all!

Thanks for that review, Meister. I was wondering about seeing this as I'm interested in politics but I saw "Six" yesterday in Portsmouth and I'm going to "A View From The Bridge" in Chi next week so it will be good to give my wallet a rest.

Well, if I do go I jolly well hope they don't remove the interval as some of us get very uncomfortable having to sit in one position for more than an hour or so. Plus, removing the interval would mean if I gave it a go anyway but thought it wasn't worth seeing through, I'd lose the opportunity to escape! As I did book for this (albeit only a £10 ticket - phew) & PN is on Tuesday 17, I should have plenty of time before I am due to attend to decide whether to risk it. It'd be a shame if it wasn't worth seeing as new plays are always my favourite part of the CFT season and what I look out for generally. However if it came to the worst, I certainly wouldn't mind having the day back to put to alternative use and it does really take a whole day to get there and back, what with multiple, slow trains. The performance I booked has sold out apart from the tix only available to young people but which they never seem to want, so I suppose the Box Office might agree to offer mine for resale, but if not, I'd still rather lose the £10 than make a trip I might regret.

Was supposed to be Press Night tonight, but we were told it was cancelled (not sure if that’s just for the Reviewers or the whole performance). Told we could go next week instead, but we can’t go next week.

Should anyone fairly local to Chichester wish to give this a try cheaply, the Box Office will be offering for resale my £10 front row ticket for the matinee this coming Wednesday, 25 October. I'd still like to see it but with a 10 am physio appointment (my usual 9 am was already taken) and 2 trains, it'd be fairly tight anyway and I'm fed up travelling to Chichester in a rush & risking the stress of train issues.
When I rang the BO yesterday I asked about PN and reviews but they were strangely cagey: they said PN had happened but no reviews had been published yet. I then asked if reviews had been embargoed until a particular date but couldn't get a straight answer to that, either. Very mysterious and unlike CFT.

I think they are hoping to avoid reviews so as to shift the remaining tickets, as they know the play is pretty poor. There is definitely something going on - as you say, pretty strange!

This is interesting rather than exciting. Thank goodness for a top rate cast. They make it interesting. I think for me the trouble is that in this day and age we know how politicians and judges are corrupt at worst and economical with the truth at best. This is more of the same. Very well acted.

An interesting idea doesn't amount to good theatre unfortunately. Very stale - I found myself zoning out throughout this. Such a shame as I love this cast of actors and I think the subject is very relevant for today. Very full audience for this too but I saw several people nodding off. For Daniel Evans' departing season, this is a sad send-off. Frustrating watching potential not working but good efforts from everyone. I wonder if a press night will get rescheduled

At last a review from perhaps a more major site (The Stage), which agrees with the above comments - ie too static & lacking in dramatic tension - and gives it 3 stars.
