I am just curious after flicking through Spotify, what are some of your favourite Act I finales in musicals and why? Whether well known or under the radar, we all have some top favourites, even if we haven't seen the show live. Two of my favourites are "Defying Gravity" and "One Day More" because they are staged brilliantly, the vocals are incredible and they truly have a powerful impact. 
I'd love to discover some new musical numbers we may not of heard before! |

Everybody Out from Made in Dagenham and Man Up from Book of Mormon are good ones. But I agree that Defying Gravity and One Day More (in that order) are probably the best.

Well for me nothing is better than One Day More as an ensemble closing Act 1 number, it's just so epic having the whole cast on stage singing the different parts, and every time I listen to the song I am hearing different parts in those closing verses. La Vie Boheme is another which is brilliant in my opinion. For a solo number I loved 12 Children from Dessa Rose (may have been the intimacy of the Trafalgar Studios 2 where I saw it, and Cynthia singing it right in my face, but it was beautiful. A couple of months ago I saw Only The Brave at the WMC and the closing of Act 1 was a song called Band Of Brothers, and given the setting of the show, as the characters set off for D Day, the emotion was powerful. I would also say, in terms of solo work, "Don't Rain On My Parade" and "Everything's Coming Up Roses" are also incredible, especially seeing them in person! And, although I haven't seen it in person. "Santa Fe" from Newsies. |

Agree, in terms of getting the audience revved up and wanting more it's a killer ending to Act 1. Phantom of the Opera with heartbroken phantom vowing revenge, and the chandelier... |

There's probably loads but standout songs for me are "Along Came Bialy/We Can Do It (reprise)" from The Producers, "A Little Priest" from Sweeney Todd, "Big Bright Beautiful World" from Shrek and despite thinking the interval seems too early within the narrative; "It Must Be Believed To Be Seen" from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.
....weirdly all musicals from Drury Lane!

Sister Act always leaves me on a high going from Raise Your Voice straight into Take Me To Heaven. (I don't like the changes to TMTH on Broadway).
In The Heights has a great one too.
Trying to think of more.

I agree completely with In the Heights! The staging, lighting and the dancing, as well as the "fireworks" lighting the sky makes for a visually and vocally stunning finale. |

The ushers have to practically restrain me with brute force to stop me tap dancing with a tin can during the interval as a result of that number.

Mrs. Henderson Presents has to be represented here somewhere. I wouldn't say it's Act I finale is up there with the best... it's 11 o'clock number on the other hand, is one of my top!  |

Yes! I was distracted and meant Say A Prayer! Thanks for pointing that out. Such an emotional ending to act 1. Although I did think that the tension it created diffused almost immediately in act 2.
