' I only hope that we never loose sight of one thing- that it was all started by a mouse.'- Walt Disney.
The British Film Institute (BFI) London is holding a two-month season that celebrates the centenary of a studio renowned for great storytelling and imaginative artistic flair, writes season programmer Justin Johnson.
Fr many cinemagoers around the world. their fist big screen experience was watching a Disney film. The story of these films began with two brothers, but exists today because of the many thousands of people working towards one vision. In 1923, a young Walt Disney and his brother Roy began Disney Brothers studios (later, The Walt Disney Company). It would have a seismic impact on animation, technology and family entertainment.
Today as a multi-million-dollar empire, with a wide variety of interests, Disney has evolved to become organisation synonymous with quality and success. A century since the company's creation, this season celebrates the breathtaking achievements of one man and the visionaries who joined him on a journey that produced an extraordinary body of work that has continued to delight all ages.
After all. it was Walt Disney who said 'Adults are only kids grown up'.
I was at the launch last night and they explained that from over 100 titles- live action movies to animation, they had to cut it down to 50- their only regret was that Dumbo didn't make it.
So, if you have a Disney favourite an would like to see it on the big screen- either again, or for the first time- this could be the chance.
The Disney at 100 festival runs throughout July and August.
You do not have to be a member to see a film.
