I had such a good day trip to Paris last year to see the Theatre du Chatelet's fabulous production of Singin' in the Rain (booked on the strength of Dan Burton's casting as Don Lockwood) that I booked for this year's 42nd Street (17 Nov - 8 Jan) without even checking the cast. Delighted therefore to find Dan returning to Paris this winter (as Billy Lawlor) and Ria Jones also in the line-up (as Dorothy Brock) alongside several other familiar names: chatelet-theatre.com/en/event/42nd-streetWith Stephen Mear again at the helm, I'm sure I'm in for another treat at this beautiful venue. I've seen 42nd Street once before - on Broadway - seems I'm destined to travel for this one (though it wasn't the reason *for* my trip to NY, just a happy add on!)

Will this transfer, do you think?
I'm kinda fully booked for my trip to Paris and rather see original French productions there, but this cast does sound wonderful and it wouldn't be too difficult for me to extend my trip to Paris for a day in December.

I heard talk of last year's SITR transferring to Broadway at some point, though that seems to have gone quiet now. No signs of a WE transfer for that, but it had of course been staged in the WE fairly recently - maybe it's more of a possibility for 42nd Street.

OK, I'm persuaded. Been able to extend my hotel booking in Paris for a night, so I'm going to see it there. Have been curious about the Châtelet anyway as it looks like a gorgeous theatre.

Is this in English or French? Don't know for certain, but guessing English - these types of Chatelet show that Stephen Mear is involved in usually are.

I wonder if they're trying to keep it a secret Singin' in the Rain last year was in English with French captions - I'm guessing as many of the same production team are involved that this will be the same.

I realise I owe Viserys a few thoughts on this... in short, I loved it! The principal cast were in great voice and I put the odd dialogue stumble down to it being only the fourth show of the run. I thought the staging, though fairly simple, was very effective, and the orchestra sounded wonderful. But the real joy was in the dancing and the ensemble were fabulous (as were Monique Young and Dan Burton) - there's nothing quite like the sound of a big tab number and those dancing feet had me grinning for hours afterwards. Top all that off with a hugely enthusiastic (though well-behaved!) audience in a beautiful venue and, outside, Paris looking glorious on a crisp, blue-skied autumn day, and it really was a delight of a day.
I'm hoping for a more considered review from Viserys - enjoy!

Well, I am still in my Parisian hotel, having just returned from the Châtelet. I thought 42nd Street was very enjoyable and the cast was top-notch. I enjoyed seeing Ria Jones after all the brouhaha about Sunset Boulevard earlier this year and Monique Young is certainly one to watch for. I really don't get why they couldn't transfer this version to Drury Lane. The tap dancing was great and I loved the big numbers such as Lullaby on Broadway but I'm honestly glad I only spent 25 Euro on a restricted view seat in the side stalls. It's all very entertaining, yes, but also very flimsy, especially the second act. I personally like a bit more conflict than "Young ingenue turns up late, gets the job anyway, gets chucked out, gets asked back within five minutes, becomes a star, everyone is super nice to each other".
In contrast I absolutely loved Notre Dame de Paris again and also enjoyed the new French show Le Rouge et Le Noir very much, which might have something to do with the dashing young lead, ahem.
Ah well, a great weekend is ending, back to the cultural wastelands of Germany tomorrow morning.

Saw this on Friday. Had slightly restricted views from first Balcony - which were fine (€36 and less than half the price of the woman sitting next to me! - thanks to good booking system). Overall I thoroughly enjoyed it. Excellent dancing (I am all tapped out for a while!). It's not profound and it has some plot holes, but it is escapist fun. I hope the Drury Lane version does well (but I wonder if it will).

Others may have spotted this, but I hadn't. www.chatelet.com/en/programmation/season-2022-2023/42nd-street/7 December 2022 to 15 January 2023 Performed in English. There are quite a few people from the Theatre Royal Drury Lane production in it too. Now wondering if I can fit in (afford) a weekend in Paris to take in this and Cabaret.

I've merged your post, Dr Tom, into an existing thread, as it seems to be the same Stephen Mears production.
