Can't think of a worse location - it's basically a roundabout, with a bit paved over.

I didn't go this year but was in London so I did swing by just to see if I could find a spot somewhere around the site to watch for half hour but it was so packed you literally couldn't even move to walk round to try and have a look for anywhere. It was absolutely crazy. Also I don't really understand why, when it's a free event, they cover all the gates and hoardings so you can't see through? People might not all be gathered in a few places if the whole thing is viewable. I didn't realize they have big screens though in some places, but that area was crazy. Anyway whilst I was walking round I think I heard a bit of Jamie Muscato and then Grease but I think their music wasn't working or something. Bloody hell I chose the wrong day to visit the yesterday what with everything going on!

On the Hamilton video a lot of the CHF fans (her husband is king george) are blaming the sound and saying the sound is always rubbish, like with Bad Cinderella the other year. Which is not just insulting to the sound team, but also not right as each video displays great performances. I always find it interesting how those who perform badly try to throw sound under the bus. His missus last year and now him? He couldn’t reach the high notes. Even the most terrible tech creative can’t save you if you can’t sing the notes as written. Just went to YT to look at Joel’s video… it’s been removed

What was the Annie Get Your Gun performance? The cast from the concert a couple of months ago? Seems odd. It's the Lavender Theatre production (open air), which opens in mid July.

It really annoys me how sound team get thrown under the bus. Gives them and us vibes.

Joel was in the audience at one of the last Cinderella shows and in the interval a massive queue of fangirls formed in the bar to get selfies with him. Weird! Poor bloke looked very bemused….

I’m never quite sure how well this works as a showcase for theatre. Always pretty hit and miss, even with shows I’ve seen before and liked. Actually put me off seeing stuff last year, so have only watched a few this time around. Noticed people asking on the Moulin Rouge video why they hasn’t posted Jamie Muscato. Found an unofficial clip of it and even with slightly iffy sound and all the screaming and whoooing that has to have been one of the highlights. What was the Annie Get Your Gun performance? The cast from the concert a couple of months ago? Seems odd. They did upload Jamie Muscato’s performance, but then set it as unlisted:

It really annoys me how sound team get thrown under the bus. Gives them and us vibes. Ultimately it’s an open air concert and they’re running through multiple different performances and performers an hour, with (I assume) no chance to soundcheck thoroughly with each of those performers. As we’ve seen with other events in recent years (Diana Ross at the Platinum Jubilee concert and Lionel Richie at the Coronation one for example), few people are immune from experiencing an issue somewhere or other - whether it’s them and their mic, or the open air environment causing problems. When the musical theatre performers are in their own theatre with their own production team, that’s when they can get it sounding how we all expect when we go to a show.

They do sound checks - there was footage on the relevant Instagram as Stories, showing various shows rehearsing on Friday - albeit, the Square would have been all but empty, which would effect the settings for the next day, but I'd expect them to be trying to use the same sound team every year, so that there was 'institutional knowledge', about how it differs between rehearsal and performance days.

If you can work your way through Joel’s many, many IG stories there’s something by way of an explanation. Fifteen minutes before the performance something weird happened to his voice. He doesn’t blame it on the sound, or the open air conditions, he admits it was him. So good for him on that.

I agree fair play...although, bizarre to repost the clips and praise on social media and then say 'oh yeah I was sh*t'. And yeah outside is obviously different and things can go wrong, but pretty much every performance sounded great and it was also very obvious it was vocal issues and not sound related. Which he has now admitted.

While not "Official" - there is, of course, at least one video of the Hamilton performance (for now)

Wasn't particularly interested in seeing Matilda, but Lauren Bryne's performance was absolutely stunning:
