I see the brilliant Glenda Jackson has died.Any memories? All my memories are post her MP years. Absolutely sensational in King Lear at the Old Vic, it's a shame the production didn't match her talent. Would have loved it if Three Tall Women could have made the transfer from NY. Brilliant in Elizabeth is Missing on TV too. 'Tis a shame we didn't get a bit more of her in her later years. One more film to come out though, which will be a very bittersweet affair, I'm sure. |

I saw her in Phedra at the Old Vic in 1984 but even by then it was a rare stage appearance. In the 1970s she and Alan Howard were the leads in an RSC Antony and Cleopatra directed by Peter Brook which sounds perfect but all accounts say it was poor. Brook blamed the actors. Strange, shows there’s no such thing as a guaranteed success.

When she made her return to Broadway in 2018’s “Three Tall Women”, I couldn’t believe I would actually get to see her IN PERSON. I waited at the stage door and she came out and took time with every single person, giving everyone a photo and a one of her gorgeous signatures and just chatting every night with people (for the entire run, from what everyone else tells me).
An absolute legend and this loss feels nothing short of monumental in the theatre community.

I saw her iconic screen roles but never saw her on stage. I did write to her when she was an MP to get a photo signed by her as I was collecting Academy Award winners autographs at the time and she graciously signed the photo and an enclosed typed letter signed letter on Commons headed paper.
One of our true acting greats who also believed in her principles so strongly she was perpared to step back from her acting career to serve as an elected person.

Only ever saw her once on stage I'm afraid, in "Rose" but obviously one of the modern greats. RIP.

Loved her, admired her integrity, very sorry I didn't see her on stage. I should have booked for Lear at the Old Vic.

I saw her in the RSC Antony and Cleopatra in 1979 and enjoyed it. She was an amazing actress with a clear but highly recognisable voice.
I am also lucky to have a letter and signed photo of her.
I think of all the wonderful performances she's left for us.

I'd forgotten that I saw Glenda Jackson do Mother Courage at the Citz in Glasgow until I read her obituary. I did remember her Bernarda Alba a few years earlier with Joan Plowright and Patricia Hayes stealing the show as the mad granny. She had amazing stage presence and a great voice ( equally effective in parliament). I hope the BBC make all of the Zola adaptation Blood,Sex and Money available again on Sounds. That does stand out as one of her last great performances.
