I must admit I've not heard of him. Must be the lowest-profile new director they've ever had. And his track record of popular hits suggests he's a very different sort of director from his predecessors - but perhaps that's what the Donmar needs right now. I wonder what his contacts book is like.

That is a surprising appointment
Judgement will have to be reserved but at first sight, Shearer feels.as if he might lack the gravitas to resonate with Donmar expectations.
And I am also not sure he is a sure fire populist given some of his recent choices.
But will wait to see what the first couple of seasons look like

Reading the article and between the lines, feels like they wanted someone with a more commerical eye and with someone who can potentially get more west end transfers.' I wouldn't be surprised if he does more musicals

I like this news as he has made some bold and interesting choices at the Open Air. Not everything was a hit but that's positive risk taking for you.
I guess we'll be getting more musicals

I have mixed feelings as this years RPOAT choices haven’t been inspiring and tbh neither was last years. I’ve not been keen to go since Jesus Christ Superstar ended its second run

Glad it’s not the continuity candidate Max Webster. Not sure if Tim Sheader wouldn’t have been a better fit for Chichester but let’s see how both venues do under their new ADs.

There's a Friends event on July 1 to discuss the new season, so I assume that the press announcement will be sometime later this month.
