Starts today, the opening film Jeanne du Barry seems only of note fir the return of Johnny Depp to the big screen (apparently he speaks his lines in French rather than being over-dubbed but apart from his presence, I think it will struggle outside of the French speaking territories) and closes with Elemental which is apparently a Pixar film (sound you can hear is of Godard, Truffaut and Varda spinning in their graves)
In between them, new films from Wes Anderson, Ken Loach, Jonathan Glazer, and Wim Wenders are among the films competing for the Palme D’Or and there are two little known films getting their first public screenings: Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny and Killers of The Flower Moon (I’m sure there are length gaps between these screenings and the general release of both of them so a brave move if they get trashed by the press): I have next to no chance of getting into such screenings but I must try to visit Cannes one year while this is taking place even if it means sleeping on the beach and catching a biopic of Su Pollard before flying back economy.

Indiana Jones had its premiere last night and while the reviews seem to generally be positive, none of the ones I’ve read have been glowing: I’ll probably see it when it’s released here but after Crystal Skull and the fact our hero is now 80, I’m not expecting much.
