It does mean staying true to the essence of what the creators intended and not seeking to impose things on a show that do not have strong roots in the text/score. Some of the most exciting theatre I have seen stays true to that approach. Always using the material as the basis for each production material and not seeking to use the material to tell another story. No one has argued that theatre should be trapped in a museum. Innovation is key. But it has to come from within and not be imposed. Maybe this production of SB will do many of those things, or maybe it won't, but we wont know for sure until it actually opens. I loved Kathryn Evans in Sunset Blvd, but that was about it for that production. It went too far the other way, a spiral staircase, some potted plants and a chaise lounge do not a palazzo make. Honour the original well, or do something different with it, like the 1996 revival of Chicago. Completely agree. Think people are looking back on the CRH version with rose tinted glasses. Was a good (one off) night out and the fabled “something different” with the actor musos and Joe playing a line on a flute or something to represent God knows what. But it didn’t compare in any way shape or form with the original. Personally I’d be gutted if the new version was like this rather than what (we think) Lloyd is going with! I think you can represent opulence better with an abstract set than a cheap as chips “realistic” stab at it (as posters in the Rebecca thread are currently alluding to!) |

I wonder if it would’ve get the investors if it was just another similar version with a big staircase. That’s only going to get compared, unfavourably, to the original so why bother? But there HAS to be something fabulous about it, you can’t just make the paying audience responsible for conjuring an artistic vision that you didn’t feel like presenting to them. If they do something interesting that’s we’ve never seen before which actually works the I’m ok with that. One costume though… that’s concerning. Completely agree with the first paragraph. And I think that’s why it’s best they don’t try to recreate Napier’s design as that’s exactly what would happen. If I win the lottery I’ll bring it back. God I wish there was an HD pro shot of the original! |

Whatever happens let’s manage our expectations. As long as it is THAT music ☑️ played loudly by a sizeable orchestra ☑️ sung by a decent cast ☑️ I don’t really mind what flights of fancy fill in the gaps. (edit *no graphic scenes of self harm…I even have to look away from the bandaging).

I've just seen a picture of the marquee/sineage for the show.
Not only is the musical stripped back but so is the name of it.
"Sunset Blvd.' Oh dear!

I saw it with Betty Buckley, Elaine Paige and more recently with Glen Close at the Coliseum. As long as the orchestra isn't stripped back, I believe there are 17, then I will be happy whatever strange things are happening in stage. |

All I am thinking is I really hope she washed her hands thoroughly after touching that phone box door, and has had all of her inoculations before trying that kind of stunt. The stench of urine alone would have been unbearable, let alone even worse undoubtedly smeared on the walls…
