I'm kind of shocked to hear that there were thousands of people online buying tickets today. It brings back memories of when the opening of a Box Office for a new Andrew Lloyd Webber musical was an event itself. I remember when Sunset arrived in NY, I think 9 months in advance you could book advance tickets where you had to mail in a check with dates and preferred section. My Mom and I did instantly and still ended up with center orchestra row Y about a week after it opened in November of 1994. The lines of people hoping for cancellations and people offering us $500 a ticket... those were the days

You know despite it being (a truly) beautiful theatre, it's not one one of my favorites.
It's too steep looking down to the stage.
I wonder if they'll do day seats, like they did for Gypsy?

Couldn't book first night now unfortunately as I'm away the Thursday-Monday with the new first night, but booked row C of the Stalls (currently the front bookable row as row B seems to be on the plan but greyed out so not sure if they'll add a further front row or 2 at a later date) on Tuesday 26th for £87.50. Row C was a mixture of £87.50 tickets and £137.50 package seats for those interested, row D behind jumped to £175. But a bulk middle section of the stalls were £87.50 for the first few dates at least. We definitely want to see this but not convinced row C will remain the front row so going to check back later. Sunset Boulevard is running a Monday to Saturday schedule. Sunday performances of Pretty Woman were busier than early/mid weekdays. Maybe at the behest of Nicole Scherzinger so she gets a two consecutive day break ?

Nicole Scherzinger will not be performing on Thursday 5 October (2.30pm performance), and Monday performances from 9 October. The role of Norma Desmond for these performances will be played by an alternate, to be announced.I wonder would she have any say in casting? Her partner Thom Evans has been trying to establish himself as a singer/actor for years… I read this as suggesting Thom Evans as alternate Norma……….!

I meant as Joe, but I’m sure he’d look great in a gold lamé turban.

Is it just me or are prices insanely high for this? Over 200 quid (inc booking fee) for centre stalls?!

Looks like they've made a few changes in early October - originally it looked as though press night would be Thurs 5th Oct with Nicole confirmed to not be performing at that day's matinee.
Now I notice on ATG that Thurs 12th Oct is off sale (no matinee or evening currently), and on Thurs 5th there's now just an evening performance. Presumably those who booked for the matinees on the 5th and 12th have been contacted and moved to another performance. So there's now an additional week of previews ahead of the official opening night.

Just looking at random dates and it's not selling well at all. Even the first preview (which I'm going to) has swathes of empty seats.

Sadly seems to be completely the norm for most ALW shows these days. Other than one offs and the staples like Joseph/JCS/Phantom. That said everything seems to have worse advance sales post Covid and more closer to dates. Hopefully it will pick up. (And it’s advance looks better than Aspects’ did FWIW).

I also wonder if the threat of rail strikes puts people off from booking in advance.

I also wonder if the threat of rail strikes puts people off from booking in advance. That hasn't stopped me going to London for my theatre weekends. I discovered the super off-peak train tickets, so while I'm taking longer travelling, it's only about £38 return now. I have also booked National Express coach as a cover for about 20-something quid as a backup in case it's needed. This has given me an alternative travel mode and still cheaper overall than the almost non-existent advance tickets on Avanti West Coast.

Currently trying to stop me getting to Sheffield for Miss Saigon alas.... I also just don't think Nicole Scherzinger is that big a draw. In fact, I know a few avid musical theatre fans who were excited about this new incarnation of Sunset until they found out she was leading it. For them, the seemingly unsuitable "star" casting of an ex-X Factor judge put them off booking. That wouldn't matter if she was bringing in a wider audience, but I don't think she's a big enough name for that anymore either. She's not a soloist who has a large loyal following, or a TV personality who's regularly active, and I don't even think the Pussycat Dolls have an ardent fan base on the same level as the Spice Girls which will always bulk up any solo endeavours. I know there are many factors at play but, ultimately, maybe it's slipping through a gap without a clear audience?

I agree, her people have been trying to make her 'happen' for years but she has never broken through and hasnt been relevant in long time. She definitely has a loyal core fanbase, buts it's relatively small. So you have a minor celebrity not known fornl acting in a lesser known/loved ALW show. Throw in high prices and travel/planning issues.

Just find a shame the show itself isn't enough to sell tickets (Joe Public generally won't know that Jamie Lloyd means may be minimal/different so don't think that's a factor). The time when ALW was the name that sold the tickets does feel long gone sadly and I mourn it (well ish; he is still the most successful MT composer of all time I guess lol).

I went in to Cats with her as Grizabella expecting the worst and she was amazing. She seemed to be taking the role seriously and committed to it so I don't think we can write her off yet (I know Norma is a way bigger ask in terms of acting though!) I think she will make it work and it will be a good show.

I love Sunset but I have zero enthusiasm for this production whatsoever. I think it's a very strange casting decision.
