Everyone has mentioned the amazing sets for the Adelphi production. I saw it with Betty Buckley and also Elaine Paige and my memory is not what it was. I remember a sweeping staircase but that's about it. Was there a swimming pool too or have i made that up? There was the illusion of a swimming pool at the very beginning. It was a tilting screen with the body of Joe Gillis facing the audience (as if the body were floating at the bottom of a pool, facing the audience). The mansion was magnificent and the split-screen effect where the mansion rose up and a separate apartment came out from underneath was also an amazing effect. The car chase effects worked very well too. The budget, which paid for a car and endless expensive costumes in addition to the above, must have been a very generous one!

I saw it originally with Patti and Kevin Anderson, Betty Buckley and John Barrowman and Elaine Paige with Alexander Hanson. I remember it vividly. The mansion was indeed magnificent with the enormous wooden bust of Norma at the base if the staircase. The mansion lifting to reveal the apartment beneath visually worked brilliantly. So whilst you could see Joe, Betty, Artie and and their friends celebrating in incoming New Year below, above you could see Norma, alone in despair with Max trying to comfort her before she slits her wrists. I also remember towards the end when Betty runs to the house to confront Joe how the made it look it was raining.

I'd love to see Beverly Knight be Norma. Wouldn't be an alternate obviously but one day I'd like to see her take

I’d sell a kidney to hear Beverly sing this score.

Oh wow, yes, Beverley would be insanely good! It’s a shame there’s not a chance of an extension with another lead, but perhaps one day she’ll do it.

I really don't think Beverley has the acting chops for this - she's a wonderful vocalist and one of our absolute greatest singers, but even after all this time I don't think she's much of an actress.

I think she is at a stage now where with the right director she could potentially pull it off.
Certainly more skilled in the acting than Nicole anyway.

I would actually argue that I don't think that's true - I think Nicole would actually give a better acting performance of Norma than Beverley would.

Beverly Knight would be amazing you’re right. Although I’d like her to be busy for a while with a transfer of Sylvia in 2024, if the theatre goddesses are listening, pretty please.

Any thoughts on stage height at the Savoy? I know some previous productions have had high stages but would you guys agree this one is unlikely to if it’s a basic set?

Thank you! Guess it’s only worthwhile if it’s cheap 😀

I've not generally had a problem from the second or third row but then I am very tall so I guess that helps. I am expecting prices for this to be stupid so I will be looking there again if it is cheaper.

How about we rewind and replace standard with minimum?

How about we rewind and replace standard with minimum? Thank you, that’s all I was asking. Perhaps I should’ve posted this in the amnesty thread?!

Great question that I was wondering myself. I remember the stage being very high for Dreamgirls at the Savoy but for Pretty Woman I think it’s a great height for the front row. I guess even with very simple staging The Glass Menagerie at the DOY was much higher than The Ocean at the end of the lane was. I guess it’s just very hard to predict, but think I’ll take a gamble on front row anyway, or as close as I can get booked!

I’ve received the pre-sale email following the website signup. It doesn’t seem to have an active link. How will it work tomorrow? Will I get another email will a link prior to 10:00 AM?
