Within the past four years, it would have to be a pre-Bridgerton Jonathan Bailey in "Company," although I had seen him in the first series of "Broadchurch." It just feels as if "Bridgerton" put a number of careers in hyperdrive. I haven't gone to theatre much post-pandemic. Feels like a busman's holiday with my current employer. Surely he was very well established before Company. He'd done masses of stage work (i remember him in South Downs which I see was in 2011) and had been the lead in a CBBC series

I go through periods where I don't see any plays/musicals for awhile, and then I'm all in again. Since the end of lockdown, and inflation and all, it's become unaffordable for me unless I manage to get heavily discounted or comp tickets. Plus I'm in a venue every night at work, so when I am off, the last place I want to be is a performance space. Sorry...

Bill Nighy in King Lear at the NT Yes, as Edgar - saw it on a school trip to London along with Antony & Cleopatra around the same time (I recently found a little drawing of him as mad Tom in my school notebook, so he did make an impression - unlike Hopkins who was surprisingly disappointing!). Probably my first visits to the NT.

I saw Brian Cox, he of Succession in his glorious latter end of career, play Orlando in wonderful production of As You Like It at the old Birmingham Rep in the late sixties ( approx dating 😂)
Also saw his son, Alan, play same role at RSC some time later 😁

Last one for now: Brenda Blethyn ( Vera on the telly ) in Steaming, run naked round the stage. Those were the days. That must have been over 40 yrs ago. I know someone will correct me if I’m wrong.

Ben Wishaw in Nunn’s Hamlet is another one I guess - don’t think he’d done much by then ( although I do recall the production had a bit of a buzz about it)

A Normal People double act… - Paul Mescal in The Plough and the stars at the lyric Hammersmith - Daisy Edgar Jones in Albion?
- a few of the Bridgerton crew were in musicals (one of them was in Book of Mormon I think) - Kit Harington in War Horse - Emma D’Arcy in The Crucible at the Yard

Michael Gambon as Othello, also Escalus in Romeo and Juliet and Peter Cauchon, Bishop of Beauvais in Saint Joan at the Old Rep, Birmingham 1968. Anna Calder-Marshall as Juliet in R&J and Joan in Saint Joan as above. Derek Jacobi in the title role of Oedipus Rex by Sophocles and Mr Puff in The Critic (a double bill) at the new Birmingham Rep. in 1972.

Kit Harington in War Horse. Didn’t make the connection that I’d seen him until I was a fair way through Game of Thrones. My two distinct memories of War Horse are the brilliance of the puppetry and, unfortunately, how dreadful he was in it. But he seems to have improved since!

Oooh, I saw War Horse at the National in 2008 so I might be able to add Kit Harrington to my list as well.

My main claim to this is that I was a student in Glasgow in the mid 1980s and saw Alan Cumming and Forbes Masson as Victor and Barry numerous times, in their own shows, as cabaret comperes, in panto at the Tron Theatre in Glasgow... It has been a delight to see both of their careers develop over the following years and so I am so excited for the V&B book next year and even possibly "The High Life - The Musical" which is reported to be on the way...

I’ve seen Forbes Masson in a few things, and I watched The High Life when it originally aired. Somehow never connected the two though. Oh deary me…

As I've been going to the theatre since the mid 70s there have been many, but the ones that spring to mind are: Tom Hardy in Man of Mode at the NT Hugh Jackman in Oklahoma at the NT Sheridan Smith in Into The Woods at Donmar Caroline Quinten in Les Mis at The Palace If memory serves then I think you will have also seen a young Damian Lewis in that production of Into The Woods at the Donmar (playing the Wolf/Cinderella's Prince). I've seen a lot of finals shows at drama schools over the last 15 years or so so I've been fortunate enough to see all sorts of future stars taking their first steps into the profession. Beyond that, seeing Benedict Cumberbatch in Zoo Story in a tiny room at the Edinburgh Fringe in 1999 is a definite highlight. His talent and commitment were palpable, and I'd still have it up there as one of the more electric experiences I've ever had in a theatre.

In Australia I saw Russell Crowe as Mickey in Blood Brothers. This would have been about 1988-1989.
I also saw him as Eddie/Dr. Scott in a production of The Rocky Horror Show.

Daniel Day Lewis and Amanda Root in an RSC tour of Romeo and Juliet some time in the 80s. James Cordon in Martin Guerre. Luke Evans in Avenue Q. Clutching at straws here a bit, but Tamsin Outhwaite in Oliver at the Palladium.

Maybe they were not unknown at the time, but I didn't know who they were.
Benedict Cumberbatch in Hedda Gabler Eddie Redmayne in Red Tom Hiddleston in Othello Hannah Waddingham in Beautiful Game Paul Mescal in Red Shoes Taron Egerton in The Last of the Haussmans James Norton in The Lion in Winter Monica Dolan in King Lear and The Seagull
I often check the old theatre programmes I keep, and get surprised at the names that didn't mean much for me then and are now fairly everywhere.
