Seems like a good season to me, but perhaps a bit light on new productions? I guess the kicking off of the Ring Cycle will be taking up lots of resources. Plenty of crowd-pleaser revivals which is understandable financially, and not a bad thing by any means! Ballet-wise, I’ll definitely be catching The Dream and Don Quixote, and will probably see if I can get to a Nuñez performance of Swan Lake too.

I want to see all the main stage ballet productions, apart from The Dante Project, some of them likely with several casts if I can afford it, so I'm praying the prices don't have another massive hike up on top of the one they've already had this season. At least I want to see fewer operas. L'Elisir D'Amore and Cav & Pag, both of which I know are reasonable productions, and maybe La Forza del Destino & Rigoletto (2nd cast) if I think those productions look bearable once I've reasearched them.

Having just read through what is on next season, it looks like a bit of a damp squib to me. Only two opera productions that are a must see:
- Handel: JEPTHA
- Bizet: CARMEN with Piotr Beczala (VERY exciting!)
I may go and see TOSCA with Sonya Yoncheva too, as I would really like to hear her sing live. Possibly the LUCIA with Nadine Sierra too.
I’m just sad that there seems to be no Benjamin Bernheim or Javier Camarena again. I would love to hear those two, so may have to travel further afield.

Yes, nothing as exciting as this year's Innocence and Wozzeck for me. I'd like to see Lucia di Lammermoor as I've not seen it for 30 years.

I'm waiting for general sale to open for Swan Lake on the 11th January. It's my first time booking a show at the ROH. Are there normally a lot of stalls seats available once general sale opens? I'm hoping to get as close to the stage as possible but not sure how likely this will be.

I'm hoping to get as close to the stage as possible but not sure how likely this will be. yeah, probably most of front row will be sold, but there will be plenty of availability in the stalls |

I'm a ROH member - looking at the seat maps, there's currently reasonable stalls availability for all but the first night (when nothing is showing up, but some may be held back for public booking) and I imagine anyone with any level of membership has booked by now, so I think you'll be fine. The sides of row A in the stalls circle may also be preferable to the back stalls, depending on your preferences. |

Really good availability for the 1st April matinee at the moment - Bracewell is wonderful, I’ve booked his dates for both Manon and Swan Lake (as well as a Kaneko show for each, in lieu of them partnering each other). There have been a few cast changes so now I'll be seeing Bracewell and Kaneko on the 1st (Kaneko has replaced Cuthbertson). Even more excited for this now.

Oh wow what a magical experience Swan Lake was. I had goosebumps the minute I walked into the ROH auditorium. Bracewell and Kaneko were utterly captivating. This was my first ballet but I’ll definitely be seeing more in future. The sheer athleticism and story telling from the entire cast was incredible (special shout out to Leo Dixon too).
I’ve been wanting to see Bracewell for a long time now and he did not disappoint. He’s such an effortless performer. Is there an easy way to track his future performances?
So glad I splurged for a front row seat. I’m still in awe and can’t wait to get back again soon.

Other ballet companies have wonderful websites in which every principal has a page with their future performances listed, but alas ROH's falls short even there. Bracewell is dancing in MacMillan's Requiem on April 4th and 9th (also to be broadcast in cinemas), and in The Winter's Tale on May 7th, 13th, and 22nd. Also, he shall dance in the Ashton triple bill The Dream/Short Works/Rhapsody in June: as Oberon in The Dream on June 18th and 22nd (the matinee), and as Hamlet in Hamlet and Ophelia on June 7th and 21st. He's dancing again in Swan Lake on April 27th and May 11th, this time alongside Franesca Hayward who, wonderful as she is, has been a disappointing Odette in the past. The new season is announced at the end of the month: if they do Romeo and Juliet again you don't want to miss his wonderful Romeo, and hopefully we'll get his Albrecht debut in Giselle |

The ROH's website did used to have upcoming roles listed on the dancers' biography pages but unfortunately that disappeared when the website was revamped a few years ago. (Frankly that revamp made many aspects of the website less good than they were before IMO.) |

Last year the new season was announced on April 26th which suggests it might be this week.... Saw the Lucia di Lammermoor last Friday: Katie Mitchell's production, revived, absolutely superb with astonishing singing from all three main roles. After a year (2023) in which I saw only 20th and 21st century opera, all excellent, it was nice to get back to some fabulous tunes and unashamedly gorgeous bel canto singing!

I really wanted to go to LUCIA to hear Nadine Sierra in the lead role, but couldn’t make it work. Hopefully, she will be back at the ROH next season. Neither of the two LSO Rondine dates worked either.

I went to the matinee of the new CARMEN today. The last performance with the first cast.
The singing from the two leads was just incredible, particularly Piotr Beczala as Don Jose. The voice sounded so fresh, and was really quite large in the house, cutting through the orchestra. The ring on the voice was thrilling. I was really moved by his ‘Flower Song’ in Act 2 and the final scene was absolute fire. I gave him a standing ovation at the curtain call, and was not the only one. I have never seen a standing ovation at the ROH, in the 10 years I have been going there. He is one of my favourite tenors, and I do not understand why he is not singing more at the ROH. I hope to hear him on many more occasions.
Aigul Akhmetshina was also a large vocal presence on stage. She was the standout when I heard her as Charlotte in WERTHER last season, and is just as good here. Her Carmen was very sexy.
The rest of the cast were good, but those two were the vocal standouts.
It is also a very nice production.
