Based on the amazing true story of 9 young women and 1 young man who went on strike outside Dunnes Stores in Dublin in the 1980s. Their union had advised them not to handle goods from Apartheid South Africa and their more than two years on strike would end with Ireland becoming the first Western country to ban South African goods. Their own union, government and (of course) the catholic church were ... little help.
A large cast ensuring that all the strikers are broadly represented. A story that goes from the mid 80s through to 2013. It feels like a musical at times, an energy pushing everything along. Hugely powerful and poignant, the ending had many of the audience and notably several of the cast in tears. Had a take a moment myself at the end and then found tears threatening again while telling friends about it a day later.
Absolutely fantastic show, hugely funny too. It feels like a comedy at times with an excellent cast (all very engaged in doing justice to their characters) and yeah, loved it. Reviews a bit odd, several papers giving it three stars which read as four stars, The Times giving it four and reading as a four and the amateur sites giving a mix of four and five stars.
