I didn't think the Operation Mincemeat section landed either tbh.

Then over to BBC 2 now. There have been a couple of gems already including Ute Lemper in Chicago. And Elaine inventing camp during the National Lottery draw.

Very underwhelmed by Ivano’s Jamie. Where is the heart and the strength? Looked like some weak pop performance.

John McCrea at the Crucible Sheffield was perfection. It’s been watered down since then to stunt casting, Michelle Visage and Bianca Del Rio and performers who have “sass” but no heart (Layton Williams I’m looking at you) I’ll never go and see it again, it’s too disappointing and a massive stretch from the incredible original we saw in Sheffield which connected with so many.

Jamie's one of the few musicals I prefer the movie of. I've never come away from a performance truly wowed by Jamie and the transitions are usually awkward as hell.

Overall a good show, and a very good showcase. Decent plug for Two Strangers. Kathy and Stella have missed a trick by not getting their announcement out in time for this. Daniel Boys was excellent. I really liked Hadestown.

I don't get the hair choice for Ivana as Jamie.
I understand he would not necessarily want to cut his hair short for the role. But it just doesn't work for the character as it is.
And yes, his voice isn't strong enough.

The Hadestown number would never make me book for that. No context, no idea. Not interested. Sorry!

I didn't think much of the original Jamie's voice either, and I hated the movie lol so I think it's just not a show for me haha
Even without context I liked the Hadestown song. It didn't make me want to pay full price today, but if a deal comes up I'd see it.
Two strangers carry a cake is appealing more and more. Wish they had performed tonight too

The Hadestown number would never make me book for that. No context, no idea. Not interested. Sorry! I often see Wait for Me (and reprise, which they showed tonight) being the go-to entry level songs for the show. So if that didn't grab you, chances are the show won't! Ironically, they're probably the ONLY songs I listen to regularly from it.

Normalising waving your phone about, singing, etc. during songs. Depressing! This was actively encouraged by the crew on duty! There was literally a woman walking up and down with a clipboard waving her arms about until enough people had taken their phones out! Standing ovations were encouraged too which annoyed me as they’re no longer reserved for the truly special.

Daniel Boys was the standout performance for me, I've always loved his voice. Ivano was dreadful, the vocal was awful. The Les Mis was disappointing as the way it was arranged really detracted from what is a beautiful song.Won't be rushing out to book Hadestown either, not a good representation and the story didn't want to make me get a ticket. Having said that a good overall show but the BBC 2 show had some great clips too.

I like how they cover all the bases. Touring shows featured alongside West End. Two Strangers in the same montage as Mamma Mia and Six.
Shame Kathy and Stella Solve a Murder wasn’t able to be featured properly (couple of clips, but if you don’t know the show you wouldn’t know where they were from.)
Think Ball and Boe were the worst parts of their respective numbers. Not sure why they are so popular.

Does Alfie Boe still sing it as "Bring Him Harm" ? Or has someone pointed out that it makes a nonsense of the story? Lol

That was quite enjoyable. They did a great job with the sound, regardless of whether it was live or not.
It's always odd when they're reworked songs for the show from how they're currently performed. The reworked Jamie with the line changes, cuts, and new dance routine, just looked bizarre. Then there are the random casts pulled together. Much as I love seeing Mukeni, Mark and Jordan back on stage together, I just can't imagine them all in featured roles in A Chorus Line. Nice to see (most of) the London Grease cast back together, although I'd be surprised if that's the tour cast.
I did feel for the poor usher who had barely recovered for finding out he wasn't winning a holiday but his name would be on a chair so he'd never get a peaceful shift at work again, before he then had to deal with being surprised by Craig Revel Horwood as well.
Don't think I'd ever want to see the Night of Musicals in person (imagine being at the back in such a big arena), but as a TV programme it comes across well.

Alfie Boe coming on and ruining it. The really highlights how I hate alfies operatic Valjean I can’t stand his VJ either. He over sings Bring Him Home in my opinion. Why not just use one of the current cast? that key change *was* nice when it first appeared in the 25th anniversary encore, before they started doing this valjean quartet to death (and always carting in alfie to do it..!!)

Where did the choreo for The One come from? It wasn’t anything like I remember from seeing ACL at The Curve.

Like with West End Live, they mostly do ‘the big number’ from a show even if it isn’t the best which ultimately does them a disservice. I find ‘One’ pretty meh as a song, let alone a finale; especially when ACL contains many great songs. Shame.
