Does anybody know whether Ian McIntosh is still in this show? Two understudy Jesi today - mat and eve. I think I've seen McIntosh once in the role. If they need to use an u/s at least put Luke Street on who is head and shoulders above everybody else vocally. I saw the show in Woking a few weeks ago and didn’t see Ian the day I went (Saturday) I missed him in WWRY last year too. I didn’t specifically see the shows to see him so wasn’t bothered either way. Is the alternate Jesus Northern Irish? I thought I could detect an accent! Really enjoyed the show but could do without the choreography- that got really tiresome pretty quickly! Yes, he is - I couldn't stand his take on the role. That and the terrible sound in Bromley early did for me, but thankfully Luke Street's performance saved the show.

Will they add new stops for this tour? If they do, I hope they recast Jesus and give the role to the person who plays it best and has filled in ALOT on this tour.

Will they add new stops for this tour? I doubt it. The Amateur licence is now available again (I have it for next year) but not allowed to advertise my production if it until the tour finishes in September.

This tour can't end soon enough for me. Yet again today we have 'understudy Jesus' on. In 7 out of 8 performances that I've seen of this tour, Ian McIntosh has failed to perform. Now, if this evening's performance was Luke Street, I'd be very happy. Alas, it's Charlie McCullagh doing both shows today, and I'm sure he has many fans but I'm not one and I'm not sure I can even be bothered to battle through Southend Pride day to go and see the performance this evening. I nearly walked out of Bromley when I saw / heard him last. Yet the producers have stage dynamite in Luke Street and leave him understatedly poncing around as Simon instead of using his powerful vocal and stage presence for the role of Jesus. I was thrilled when Ian McIntosh was announced for this tour - shame he's only done one show out the eight I booked. Very disappointing all round.

I’ve seen the tour 15 times (yes really lol) and Ian has done all of them other than one which I’d booked deliberately as was a scheduled Luke one. Agree it’s odd to have Luke but use Charlie. But think it’s cos he was the official u/s and alternate from the start (and Luke was Judas) and was only later Luke was added as a Jesus. Poss the company mgt don’t wanna challenge the initial decisions? But no doubt Luke is insanely good! Ian being off a lot seems a relatively recent (but widely reported) thing. I’d say go though! Such an epic production that will poss never be on in UK again after this. (I’m doing Glasgow for this reason lol).

Probability and chance are a funny thing.
I had to go to the Covid OAT version 9 times before I saw Riccardo and the young Latin (forgot his name sorry) Jesus.
Had 8 Declan and Tyrone shows before….

If you've ever been to Southend, there's nothing to be prideful about Jokes aside, apparently the Southend leg hasn't been doing well. Seems like the Cliffs can't catch a break! I hope the recent absences haven't been because of that. Edit: Another thing you've got to think about is that this musical basically eats singers for breakfast lunch and dinner so I wouldn't be surprised if they'll start doing a revolving cast thing so they can rest for a day or two.

I got lucky with OAT and Barbican. In fairness, I've probably seen this version 50+ times over the years since Regents Park (two seasons, plus covid season, Barbican season then UK tour) and have been lucky. My frustration is more the under-utilisation of Luke Street - the guy needs a regular big role in a big show.

Aaaah, Southend is alright! I used to do the car cruises in my late teens, beeping at the girls, giving it the 'oi oi' Engerland fan type banter. How times change... or maybe not... Anyway, I'm hoping Charlie overdoes it in the matinee and enables Luke to close Southend. Never been to the theatre before but it looks like it could be quite parochial and smell a little of OAPs.

He deserves more but wondering if he’ll get alternate Strat again given his association with Bat….

I don't normally track individual artists but he forced himself in to my radar with his versatility and I'm keen to see what he does next.

My reply was to the comment that JCS is vocally demanding and, this being the case, the proposed u/s could always switch. Obviously I wouldn't wish ill on anybody.

I don’t think you afforded the same courtesy to Alfie Boe (or Michael Ball) when praising John Owen Jones (and Earl Carpenter). 😬

Credit where it's due - Charlie and the whole cast are smashing it tonight. Absolutely brilliant first half.

Also, there is NO backstage at the Cliffs. The back of that stage is genuinely the back wall, so I wonder how everything's fitting back there.

I reckon it's around 90% capacity. Around 35% OAP, 35% middle age 20% twenties 10% under twenties. This show suits the wide Southend stage. I'm pleased that my Bromley nightmare has been vanished and full credit to Charlie as Jesus because he is aceing it and I'm happy to stand corrected on my earlier initial disappointment.

"Could We Start Again Please" has never sounded so good accompanied by the rustle of a plastic bag.
