Saw the matinée of this comedy today. Thought the first half set-up was merely amusing, but that the no-holds-barred second half payoff was belly laugh hilarious. Worth it for a good laugh! Some spoilers follow. . . Basically, a conniving boss puts his 5 peon white collar workers, in Columbus Ohio, through layers of on-the-job persecution, with the threat of a firing looming. So far, so Mike Bartlett's "Bull," with an office instead of a boxing ring as a set. But then, the religious one gets a "vision" of a $500 million lottery win that will allow the 5 to escape, and things go haywire and get genuinely funny. . . The tone of the first half is like an episode of "The Office," while the tone of the second half is more like Basil Fawlty beating up Manuel, where everyone wants to take a turn at being Basil Fawlty. As the meekest and most seemingly mild of the employees, Audrey Anderson's Hannah generates huge laughs as her worm turns into a Basil Fawlty; as the most submissive Manuel of the group, Wesley Griffith gets huge laughs by taking the most abuse; and as the most pompous and preeningly religious employee, Gabriel Paul gets huge laughs when his mask finally slips. Other comedic joys include: how extremely and gleefully abusive Jack Bennett's Boss character gets with his employees; how superior his pet employee, Joanne Clifton's Jacqueline Vanderbilt, can act with the others; and just how much crap long-suffering Judith Amsenga's Kate is willing to put up with. For me, it's when the whole thing gets really silly in the second half that the belly laughs come. A comedy that actually builds to laughs. 4 stars from me.

Was also at the matinee today. Thought this was really strong. Act one is a lot of set up, introducing us to all the characters, but some good laughs along the way. Act 2 is 100MPH absolutely hilarious physical comedy and many laugh out loud moments. Nice to see Southwark playhouse so full on a Tuesday matinee. 4 star and a recommendation from me!

Apparently performances cancelled until Monday due to cast illness. Only found out a few hours before the show last night when I was emailed by my ticket supplier. No mention on Southwark Playhouse website, just not able to book tickets for the weekend.

Slight voice of dissent here. The first half being reminiscent of The Office is fair but it's slow and not as funny as it thinks. It also doesn't do the set-up for the second half. A small but noticeable number of empty seats after the interval and the second half is SO different and so OTT that I wonder if they could do more with letting us know that beforehand.
{Spoiler - click to view} I had read the programme about the violence and wondered just what was going on... then I got my answers. It is done with gusto, and the physical theatre and timing is utterly fantastic. It goes very broad and dumps everything around it's themes, the violence overtakes everything. Yes, maybe that is the point but if so it throws the nuance so far out the window that it makes the first half almost worthless.
Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed it and I laughed a lot but I did leave feeling pretty unfulfilled.

Was alarmed by a very bad review I read somewhere, so went to this with some trepidation...in the event, no reason to worry. Others have commented on a disparity between the two halves, but I found the first half perfectly engaging, and chuckled a good deal - but yes, the big laughs come in pt 2 and even it wasn't quite "Noises Off" or some other classic, I still found myself laughing in the face of some (otherwise) truly horrifying moments! Congratulations to the cast on some well-drilled manic performances. A thoroughly good night out, and as such, quite the rarity!

I laughed out loud a lot during the character-driven Act 1, and even more so during the more farcical Act 2.
This is great entertaining theatre, no more. No messages, just a lot of fun (although the lady next to me remained po-faced throughout, so not everyone's cup of tea).
I can't single out any of the cast, they each inhabit their characters perfectly. Comedy is hard to get right, so credit to the director too, especially for all the physical stuff.
On for one more week, so grab a ticket if you can find one.
Four stars (would be 4.5 if I did halves)
Act 1: 19:37-20:34 Act 2: 20:55-21:39

As my second show of the day with a £15 ticket offer from TT, this really was a mixed bag for me. Whilst a great cast has been assembled and a worth the watch, it was the completely contrasting pacing of the two Acts of the play that stopped me from loving this. If Act 1 which for me was just ok with the comedy, pacing wise it was just a bit too slow for me and after watching it tonight, I can understand why some folk would of bailed out during the interval.
Now Act 2 on the other-hand was worth the ticket money and the frantic physical and verbal comedy hit the mark with me and provided those LOL moments that were missing in Act 1. I’d just wished some that had been in the first Act to make it a more balanced play overall.

Managed to see this yesterday afternoon ?previ trip was cancelled) and while I enjoyed it, I definitely didn't leave feeling blown away by it.
That first act was like watching an episode of The Office, there were a few laughs around the room, but that was about it.
2nd half was much better and the physical comedy was great, but it still left me wanting more. Maybe it was the story itself (my other half's biggest complaint was that HR would definitely not allow this to happen).
Overall, glad I saw it, but don't think I would see it again.
