Burt Bacharach has passed away. I've been a fan of his music for as long as I can remember and saw him perform a couple of times at the RAH years ago. More recently when the Menier did Close to You, Burt appeared on stage at the press night, to everyone's amazement, and performed a number. Then at the opening night of the Criterion transfer at the end of the show we were were all all asked to make our way out to Piccadilly Circus and a stage had been set up and Burt appeared and did a couple of songs with the cast. The public walking past couldn't believe and the theatre audience didn't know in advance either. It was an amazing moment. So many greats in their 90s are now passing away.

Burt was such a class act with ageless songs that will last for ever. RIP.

Really recommend listening to Close To You It's the recording of Bacharach reimagined songs by Kyle Riabko and includes Steph McKeown who Kyle later married. Beautiful versions of his music.

There can't have been many 87 year olds who have played the Pyramid stage at Glastonbury.
I remember watching him on TV. Very dapper, he was. Introduced his son, I think.

Another legend leaves us, but what a talent, and what a career. Not many writers can take you all the way from Marlene Dietrich to Aretha Franklin to Elvis Costello. An amazing catalogue of songs which it will be a pleasure to revisit time and time again.

I completely agree - what an amazing catalogue of classic songs. 73 Top 40 hits in the US and 52 in the UK, not many people can say that.
I also saw the musical Close to You and really enjoyed it. I remember a particularly lovely version of Raindrops Keep Fallin’ on My Head with the cast playing along on ukuleles.

Close To You was so good. I accidentally bought tickets (at the Menier) for the sofas on stage - such a happy accident. Very enjoyable.
And a good life, well lived for Mr Bacharach. RIP

Lots of great clips on BBC4s Bacharach at the BBC, and then there was Cliff and Cilla murdering the Look of Love and Walk on By. She's sharp on the high notes and he's too square to manage the rhythms. And Engelbert has never heard of syncopation either.

I got to see Burt twice in concert towards the end of his touring years (which I guess would have continued had entertainment not shut down). He didn't sing very much, but he played, and the songs are so timeless and memorable regardless who is singing them.
Great memories and songs that will live on.
I also saw Close To You three times (might even have been four) across both venues, sadly not with Burt there, but Kyle Riabko really showed how that music can live on for many generations to come. And yes, I got to try out the sofas. Funny story. It was a show I recommended to my mum, and she watched the show from the audience thinking the people on the sofas were part of the show.
Making it to 94 is still quite an achievement. I've refrained from starting playing through all of Burt's songs I like on YouTube as I will never get to bed.

A lovely version of one of the classic catalogue when Burt got his award at the White House. Rumer talked a while ago about this performance and said she was terrified when singing it, you wouldn't guess it.
