He was always very funny and quick with a riposte. I'd forgotten that he adapted EM Forster's Maurice for Merchant Ivory too.

So sorry to hear this sad news. I enjoyed seeing Kit and the Widow in Salad Days, at the Vaudeville Theatre in 1996. There's a very amusing and endearing bio of them in the programme.

They worked with Sondheim when he was the first Cam Mack professor at Oxford. But their musical about Rasputin never had a successful run
